987.2 RUST!

Sorry to swear with a 4 letter word, but just a heads-up to fellow 2009 Boxster owners.
Last wash I noticed some rust colour on the rear of the OS sill right where the mud guard moulding is on my white painted Boxster.
Got my head out of the sand this afternoon and removed the moulding (5 simple screws) and gave the area of small bubbles a good poke with a sharp scriber. Indeed, surface rust on the edge in the stone chip, half where I spotted it, 1.2 under the moulding.
Currently under treatment coats all protected from the drizzle rain. No perforation, but I bet it would be close by the end of the year.

Kurerust, etch primer (both now applied) white stone chip tomorrow and some Porsche white touch-up enamel to finish it off then a good wax and the moulding back on.
Other side is solid looking, but tempted to remove the moulding and have a good look.

No other rust spots on the surfaces you can see, but a warning to you all!

I will have a look at mine when the weather improves.
The front wheel arches where I get gravel rash occasionally and also the area by the bonnet catch which also seemed to have bubbled slightly I have used Hammerite Smooth White as a touch-up and it’s not a bad match for Carrara White.
Don’t think the colour match would stand close scrutiny, but OK for a small area on a wheel arch.

A job I've been meaning to do for a while 911hillclimber

Got some time off in June so will get the car in the air and whip the mudguard moulding off

Finished the job today except putting the plasticmoulding back on.
chip and paint should be hard tomorrow.
the rust spot was very deep and would be a hole later this year I think.
I too have some bubbles by the bonnet latch, a place with no wear or tear!
These cars are getting old now, this is just a reminder of that fact.

I assumed the bonnet patch is due to dissimilar metal reaction with the catch.
After I did the clean up I refitted the catch with a couple of fibre washers between the bonnet and the catch to hopefully stop it recurring.

Good call and a good insulating solution.
It is my next patch to look at. You are right also about white smoothrite, perfect paint match.

I made some years ago 2 shaped patches in white plastic (plastic padding spatulas) and double sided taped them to the leading edge of my sills. Still there and well peppered by grit.
