987 alloy wheel change - advice pls

Having had my 987 since last summer and being more than happy with it - except the self unlocking keyfob but thats another story....
After chatting with a mate at work he's got me thinking about changing my alloys. I currently have the standard 17" boxster type II and I'm looking at changing these to the 19" Carrera S ones. Where would I go to do this?? I know my OPC could provide them but surely there are other places. Anyone know of any places who take your old ones as trade in as the cars only done 6000 miles and there mint. I am a little reluctant to purchase these blindly off the internet and have phoned a few local boy racer type outlets in the North East but so far have been unable to source 4 wheels. I'd be gratefull to hear of anyone who's bought alloys out there or maybe I should just go to my OPC?? also I presume I'd be better of with 'original' wheels as I notice a few of these internet firms offer 'replica' wheels. Is there a difference?? any advice much appreciated.

cheers,

Jon

I would guess check the usual places - www.design911.co.uk etc etc - there are loads of them advertising in PorschePost.

The only thing with replica wheels is to check that the contour of the inside of the rims matches your own wheels. I had this explained to me once recently by a bit of an expert in the field....

If you look at your rims, they will be completely smooth inside. This is to do with the ventilation of the brakes and how the air flows through and around them. A lot of replica wheels will have a lip on the inside as part of the manufacturing process. What happens here is that it disturbs the air was it exits the brake area.

I believe the most common symptom is that you end up with streaks of brake dust down the side of your car [&:]

I'm sure I'm totally wrong - and that load of people have replicas with no issues....

It might be worth asking Jasmine, they sell new and second-hand wheels, so would no doubt offer part-ex on your current ones. Makes the transaction easy, and if you're not too far away (I don't know where you are, but they're in Lancs) I'm sure you could drive over and do the swap there and then and check all is OK before parting with the money.

Have a look at the links on their website for details of wheels and PX.

thanks penfold944 & pae. I've checked out the websites and spoke to Jasmine who unsurprisingly suggests my 17" wheels are worth buttons trade in.
PerformanceAlloys in Ireland seem to do some decent deals so a change could be in the offing.
now, if anyone wants a set of excellent condition 17" alloys with tyres I know where theres a set going! [:)]

Yes, I'm sure there's "no demand at all for stuff like that, mate" when you're selling []. I thnik you'll find there is a ready market as people are always changing/upgrading so try an ad on here to gauge interest - or have a look on e-bay to see what they're going for.

i wanted to change mine last year, the standard 17" are unfortunately practically worthless as the wheel width is only 235 rear and 205 front. my car had only covered 2000 miles at the time and nobody wanted them. i also regret not having ticked the box when ordering my 987. the best thing to do is wait until your tyres have worn out and upgrade the wheels at the same time, thus convincing yourself the "new" wheels are goodish value. i can't wait to wear mine out. genuine 19" carrera S can be yours for £2,300 fitted with tyres inc VAT, 18" boxster S about £1,800.

You can always console yourself by remembering that the car will handle better on the 17" (18" for the 987 S), and the replacement tyres are cheaper too...[:)]
