Quite possibly the OSR control arm (commonly called tuning fork). A good test is to drive at 20mph and wander over the cats eyes. If you get a hollow rattle on the rear suspension, this is your nemesis.

Best news is that parts are available OEM, so a little cheaper.

You can use the same technique to test the other 3 corners.

The noise sounds so bad because of play in the bush that attaches directly to the bodywork below the drivers chair.

Hi there im new to the forum, my 2005 987 has developed a very annoying rattle on the back end when going over uneven ground. Sounds like something is loose banging back and forth. Checked everything, road tested with engine cover off, Boot empty, everything. Cannot find the source. Its located almost directly behind the drivers seat. Any ideas ???
Thanks

Exhaust shields checked and repaired found the nuts had worn through on two pannels. soft top struts, mounts, ball joints and mech all secure And working correctly. will try driving over cats eyes on the journey to work tomorrow, is there anyway to check/test the control arm bushes?? I have acess to a 4 post lift, 2 post lift and pit.

thanks for the relpys !

Try a crowbar Luke..!

Other than that, you'll probably need to remove the supension component(s) and examine the bushes for wear. Depending upon mileage, it's likely that they're due for replacement anyway.

Going to strip down the o/s/r suspension and check all parts for wear sometime this week. Does anyone know the required torque settings for the componants, when i rebuilt the suspension

thanks

Replaced both rear control arms and drop links car is still ratting/clunking when going over bumpy road, behind drivers seat !!!!

Hi Luke

Might be worth you dropping our Boxster register technical guy an email at

steve@jazweb.co.uk

Steve runs an indy Porsche garage and is always happy to offer advice.

i know you have tried everything but my rattle on a previos Boxster was a shock absorber even though it wasn't leaking.

Cheers

Tracy

Well!! What was it in the end?

A lot of these posts are like cliff hangers lol!

Members come on here with the problems and then never update with a result!

😃

Would be nice to know what the problem was in the end?

Hope it was all sorted out in the end!

👍

gotta love a good cliff hanger, been so busy lately forgot to update the thread.

replaced rear drop links and rear control arms, made the ride alot better but the rattling was still present.

so i decided the cab was coming out.........

removed the seats and found drivers seat to have extra foam in the base (previous owner was a short fella), removed this.

found insulation under the carpet to be sodden and footwells to have puddles in..... this was due to a lack of seal on engine bulkhead cover (belt access pannel) - cleaned up and resealed pannel, dried out carpet and footwells.

discovered under the drivers seat to be 4x access holes to the strengthening bars/structure?? in the floor pan.... well it turns out pens and coins can fit very well into these holes and riggle their way deep around the floor pan... and start rattling !! removed 6x metal pens and £3.85 in change!

refitted carpet and cab making a point too seal up the access holes in the floor pan structure!!

took her out for a drive on a bumpy road and no more rattles! it was such a good feeling haha

conclusion is no more rattle, car handles abit better thanks to new suspension componants and most important i had great fun taking apart and putting back together the boxster :) it was good bonding time with the car!

Great, and lucky escape wth the damp carpets that any control modules didn't 'drown' !
