987 Boxster Thorax Seat Airbag wrong way around!!

I was reading through the 987 Boxster brochure and other magazines last night and was looking at pics of standard seat back rests[8|] Anyway, being a tech head Aerospace Engineer, I noticed the seat back 'Thorax' Airbag plastic cover is always on the side closest to the car doors. This is logical when looking at the direction of deployment. Well the wierdest thing is that the thorax airbag plastic covers in the backrest on my 05 plate 987 2.7 are facing the middle of the car, i.e. passenger and driver airbag covers are pointing towards the armrest and at each other!! In theory, this would mean the airbags would deploy on the wrong side of the seat. I think this is a factory monumental stuff up if true. Anyway, my car was picked up by the roadside assist truck and taken to Reading OPC. They will tell me tomorrow if I am right and the way ahead! If my theory is right this could be extremely embarassing for Porsche!! keen to hear your thoughts guys[8|]

Hmmm!
Sounds like someone's made a boo-boo! Mine are on the outside of the seats (as I remember) as you correctly point out there's not much protection in a side impact!
Red faces at Porsche methinks[:)], unless the OPC took them out for a reason and then re-fitted them incorrectly.[]
I hope they sort the problem out for you and you're soon right on the left and left with the right one on the right.....if you see what I mean![:D]

Thanks Rob, couldn't get to sleep thinking about it last night! Looks like the back rests are on the wrong sides of the car!! I bought the car brand new so I don't know what has happened, seems to be that it came from the factory like it and missed QA!![:(] Guys at work couldn't work out why a 6000 mile Porsche was being driven onto a low loader!

How odd.

I've just been to check mine to see if mine was wrong aswell but it seems that all is OK in mine. I wonder if yours was a Friday afternoon build?

Anyone see any probs with the OPC swapping the back rests from drivers side to passenger side? I have heated seats but would expect it to not be a problem. Should I demand completely new seats or sports seats for the hassle??? Or a half price 911[:D]

Try asking for a GT3 on loan while they sort out your car....it's the least Porsche should do (IMHO)[:D]!
Regards
Rob

Well if they are wrong then you have been driving around in a car for 6k miles that isn't as as safe as it should have been - goodness knows what might have happened in a side on collision. There should be some serious grovelling and red faces at Porsche for this one !!

I wish you had pictures of this for my "oops" file.

So, here is one a took a while ago of a new US 996 turbo at my local dealer.

Oh my god! They've put the steering wheel on the wrong side [:-]

My steering wheel is in the boot[:D] Latest is the OPC agree with the wrong airbag config and are awaiting warranty claim instructions from Porsche AG. In the mean time I have a dirty C class[:(]

An update on my seat airbags for you all. As suspected the OPC, on instruction from Porsche AG have swapped the seat backs from each side of the car over. Everything appears normal now with the airbags and as a gesture of good will I have been given a nominal sum to spend in the Porsche shop selection. Didn't stop me driving away from the OPC though with a radio that needed reseting as it was unusable. Attention to detail!! I only hope Porsche AG do a thorough Quality Control investigation at the Finland plant. Heaven knows what would have happened in an accident! Have hated the whole experience really and has prompted to me to start looking at other brands[&o]
