987 Boxter - my first impressions

A month or so ago I asked this forum for advice on whether a 2.7 987 Boxster Tiptronic was a worthy purchase as an every day car. I was worried about performance against my Sunday use manual 993 C2S. Tip was needed for the wife who only passed her test in an automatic. As you had been kind enough to offer advice I thought I'd post my findings.

Picked up the 3 year old 987 Tip yesterday. My wife and I used the day for a nice lunch at the Crab & Lobster near Thirsk, North Yorkshire and took the opportunity to have a bit of a blast around the lovely roads North Yorkshire has to offer. I admit to being a little nervous as to whether the performance of the 2.7 in auto was going to be a bit of a let down.

It turned out I couldn't have been more wrong. As everyone had told me, the performance is really only a little down on 0-60 and the in gear performance is virtually identical. Given no-one ever does 0-60 it makes little difference and I was truly amazed. The exhaust and air intake sound is simply gorgeous (Ok, not quite up there with the 100 cell cats and RSR's I have on the 993) but far better than I expected. The handling is an absolute peach and the performance is extremely good. The rev neadle fairly flies around (aided by shorter gearing than 911's but nevertheless still a joy).

I have to admit I was nearly a paid up member of the 911 or nothing club but can see now why Porsche keeps the engines in the Boxsters and Caymans below 911 levels - if they were on a par the Boxsters would almost certainly be the better cars. A poor mans's 911? Absolutely not!

What a fantastic sports car. Even in automatic!

Thanks for helping me make the right decision.

After 5 911's and paid up member of 911 or nothing club I bought my first Boxster in 1997 as I no longer needed the +2 seats

Since making that move I am currently on my 5th Boxster and have to say I think £ for £ it's the best roadster Porsche make today [8D] and I will no doubt buy a 6th one when the model has a sensible change.

In the meantime my 3 year old and I look forward to some more serious topless motoring through 2008 [;)]

Welcome to the mid engined world of Porsche

As another newcomer to the Boxster cars, I have to say that I agree with you about the performance. I have a Boxster S Tiptronic and I've been most impressed, particularly by the road-holding. It feels as though it's on rails through even the fastest bends and I can't fault the engine performance either. It does feel slightly 'twitchier' than the 993 Targa I had before this, but that may be a function of very responsive steering that I'm not yet used to. I'm looking forward to better weather and some fun touring this year - it's a very practicable car as well as being a superb sports machine.

Well done Lee - so glad you are happy with the car, forums are so full of bad news and not enough good stories - Enjoy :D

Don't forget to let the wife have a go occassionally ;)

I'm going a bit off topic here but I've just read thru this thread and wanted to ask :-
Do people think they can tell (from driving!) wether the 987 S gives out noticeably more power than a 986 S ?
I know on paper it would suggest they do but I haven't as yet driven a 987 S.
I know some of you are going to hate me for what I'm about to say !!......but...
I'm pretty dissapointed with the power output from my 986 S (550 spyder). I've only had it 6mths and now that I'm more used to how it handles and have started to push it more I've come to realise it's just not fast enough - it's not much quicker (if at all) than my volvo C70 T5 conv - which is a tank of a car!
In fact I've been starting to ask myself "is it possible to fit a turbo to a boxster?"
But seriously now - I just wondered what peoples thoughts were on the power output of the 987 S V's the 986 S ?
