987 ignition key locked

Morning all,
just all set for day out in York until I found the remote unlock wldnt work on my 987. So I tried the old trick of manually opening the door and putting the key in the ignition (always worked on my 986) but the battery appears to be dead, and the key will not now remove from the ignition switch! I have had to close the drivers door carefully as the window won’t drop, and lock the door manually with the spare key. I can put the battery on charge of course, but why won’t the key come out?
To put the tin hat on it, my daily driver has a nail in a back tyre, what’s the chances!! so no day out for us !!
just a trip to the tyre centre ????
Any ideas gratefully received as always

I would suggest once you have some battery life the key will be able to be used to start the car and will then come out when you turn the engine off. Not sure how the lock works but I think there is a solenoid type latch onit that needs power to release. Not certain of this complet though.

From memory there is a little "release button" in the key surround that you need to depress to release key

thanks for all the speedy replies 🙏🏻 I said about charging the battery but Doh! forgot I can’t release the bonnet. so my industrial size jump leads came in handy connect to my daily driver and jump the fuse box . Got the bonnet released and the key come out, but blow me the drivers door window motor was ticking away and eventually opened the window fully, and now won’t close! So I now have the roof cover over while trickle charging and hope it doesn’t rain. some days you just wish you hadn’t bothered getting up at all! 😩

thanks again for all the advice

Wasn't aware the Good to Know went that far back - so thank you for this tip

As for the key being stuck, yes happened to me when the battery went flat. Got mine out by restoring power

You may need to reset window positions. Open the window fully, release the switch, then “open” it again holding switch for 5 Seconds.

then close it fully, release, then repeat holding the switch for 5 seconds.

Thanks I’ll bear that in mind. Luckily after trickle charging all day the window operation was back to normal and I was able to close up for the night! Left the charger on overnight so hope to be able to start up today and go for a run. Some things were simpler on the 986!
