987 ride on 19's

Going to get a 987 with 19" wheels. I would go for the PASM, but going approved-used this is a rare option on the lower price cars. What's the ride like on 19"s with normal suspension ? I'm going to do 20,000 plus miles a year in it...

PASM isn't generally recommended for the Boxster. And it rides, handles better and is quieter on 18" wheels.

I drove two 987s at Millbrook recently and the one on 19" wheels felt distinctly more nervous at high speed. The instructor, who had been driving the car on several days, agreed. The one on 18"s felt much better.

A classic case of "if it aint bust don't try and fix it" 18's on standard set up is the only way to go on the Boxster [;)]

we have a Boxster S with PASM and 19 inch rims (it was a cancelled order) to be honest would not spec it ourselves again .. next one wont have it ...

Just to provide a note of dissent, I have PASM and 19" and the ride seems absolutely superb. I think the answer is if you can take them for a test drive and see. I was told that 19" make it easier to resell as they are more desirable. Take it for a spin!

I spec'd 19" and PASM on my 987 S and I personally love it to bits. I was on the track-day at Combe on Saturday and tried the car with the sport setting on the PASM on and off - and can honestly say the transformation in Sport mode was astonishing. It turned a car that was good, but a little sloppy (admittedly compared to race cars which I usually drive on-track - but hey, isn't that what Porsche are about?) into a true firm, tight thoroughbred. Put another way, I didn't see many other Boxsters overtaking me.....

Personal choices, as ever....

And another view....

I have 19" Carrera's and standard suspension and can not complain. The ride is very firm and you do have to look well ahead and drive around pot holes, but for me that is part of the appeal of a sports car. I have tried 18" on standard suspension, and both 18" and 19" cars with PASM and I don't regret my decision.

Its an interesting question that takes me back to buying a Boxster S in 2000. I didn't know whether to keep the standard 17s or get the optional 18s. All the advice was stick to the 17s, the 18s don't give a great ride or provide as much feedback. Now 18s are brilliant beware 19s, how can this change be explained, whats happened to make 18s so great. I know the model has altered a bit but surely the suspension is hardly different?

Presumably the suspension is now tuned to the ride / handling characteristics of the 18" wheels - not sure exactly what would change, maybe softer damping to take the edge off of the stiffer sidewalls?

Hi Rob
I changed from a 987S with standard suspension on 19" Carreras to my current 997 Carrera S.
I found the Boxster was fine on them, a little more fidgety but nothing (IMHO) much in it. Went touring to south of France in it and no problems with comfort or handling on a myriad of surfaces. I wouldn't recommend PASM myself as it it's just too crashy and ruins the sweet chassis on real roads. If you intend to track the car, well that may be a different matter. Personally, I find the PASM in my carrera way too hard for public roads and I certainly wouldn't have specced it if I had to pay for it.
If you can, try them back to back from an OPC to see what you personally prefer.
Have fun[;)]
