Amidst all the excitement and the thumps of £2K wedges hitting the sales desk does anyone know if the problem has been resolved in this "almost entirely new" car?

This is the nearest I can get so far -

The 997 engine is an evolution of the 996 engine. I have to believe it will incorporate fixes for the RMS problem, the porosity problems, the cylinder liner coming loose failures, and so on. The S engine will be the same evolution engine but with increased displacement and associated tuning. It may have additional reliability reserves; it will be interesting to see when & how it finally comes.

Well we know the displacement is not increased...

The liners/porosity probelms only affected early cars. (Just a batch of 98's)(JCB)

Maybe they have fixed the RMS issue - it is in their interest to do so!

Tool Pants mentioned that the RMS used in the 997 is the same one as used in the Cayenne engine (same part number).
I hope that's an indication that they have rethought the design.
