987 roof not fitting into side channel

Hello
I recently bought a 2005 987.1 S and Have noticed that the passenger side of the roof doesn’t fit into the side channel correctly. The roof figment is fine in the front and back but doesn’t line up on the side. I’ve checked online and found a couple of videos showing how it could be the elastic retention mechanism but I’ve checked and it is tight. Has anyone else had this issue, and more importantly had a resolution to this problem? I’ve included a picture to further show the issue.
Thank you in advance for any help.
Andrew

This is quite a common problem. I had it on both my 987s. It's quite a Heath Robinson arrangement with button hole elastic you would normally find on adjustable waist school trousers!! The elastic can be adjusted a few times but I was told that once it had fully stretched the only option was a new roof! I didn't do that - I found a friendly local car trimmer who replaced the elastic and all was well. I'm not sure where you are based but may be ask on your Region forum page if anyone knows a car trimmer local to you who may be able to do this for you.

Thank you Laura.
I checked all the elastic and it was all taunt. I noticed a steel cable that runs along the edge of the roof lining which is a lot looser on one side of the roof than the other. I’ll try to find a trimmers in my area and take it in to them to look at. I dread the price of a new roof….
Thanks again for your advise.
Andrew

Thank you again Laura. I have an appointment with a local trimmer next week so hopefully the roof will be fixed before the rain comes again.

Did you get your roof fixed because mine does the same on the drivers side and I've tried the elastic trick to no avail. Scratching my head now!

I'd love to know what the fix is.

Not yet. I have an appointment with a local trimmer who says he has seen the problem before and quoted me £80+vat to sort it. I’m taking it in on Friday 18th June so as soon as it has been done I’ll post what the fix is

I looked at your photo and mine is not as bad as that, just jumps out of the channel and sits outside it. I look forward to your response.
Nice colour roof btw, mine is blue.

I had a similar occurance on my 987. Also had the steel cable showing on closure.
My solution was to close the roof a bit at a time to the point where the parts were going to overlap and guide the roof over the plastic bits, and tucking the steel cable out of the way. Not while the roof is moving!
Did this a couple of times and everything seems to have re-routed itself and works properly now.
Good luck,
Peter

Thank you Peter I’ll give that a try just to see if it seals properly. Hope there is no more rain before I get it over to the repair shop ????
