987 Roof rattles

Recently purchased a 6 month old 987 in Seal Grey with grey laether Bose PCM and S Wheels. Car was ex Porsche UK with 3k miles. With the roof down which it has been most of the time it is superb! I do however have an annoying rattle from the roof area just behind my head when the roof is up. It is going into my Porsche centre soon who seemed to think it was a common problem. Anyone else got this or know the cure?

There is a tech service bulletin for rattling wind deflectors (they add afew bits of foam tape !), and you have to be careful with the position of the seat backs against the engine firewall. Also the seat belt buckle on the passenger side can knock the side of the seat when not in use.

there are alot of parts in that roof structure, so it could be anywhere - hope they are able to find something for you .

Stewart, the roof on my 987 has rattled pretty much since day one, firstly the passenger side which I took and had fixed within a couple months, then the drivers side started so I had that fixed when they did the oil pressure switch thingy and now you've guessed it the passenger side is rattling again. The first service is due in about 4k miles so in the meantime I'll just have the roof down or turn the radio up as I just can't be arsed to take it back in again. Don't get me wrong I love the car but it's had more rattle's and stuff over one year than my wife had over 4 years in her MX-5 - as she keeps reminding me!!

Yup mine rattles too esp on pasenger side. Its not so bad since I had my second new roof under warranty due to rubbing/wear and frankly the OPC making an a**e of the first replacement

...on the 986 and I suspect it is the same with 987s; they solve some of the rattle (hood noise) by tightening the cables which you can sort of see when the roof is half way down from the sides... Mine had a rattle which only happened at high speeds (well, it was more like wind catching onto the hood, momentarily, in the front rather than a rattle) which was solved by tightening these cables by the OPC.

Thanks for your comments guys. I am I suppose a bit disappointed that it is not an uncommon problem but I will see what the dealer finds and give some feedback.Interesting comment re Mazda! I exchanged an RX8 for the Boxster after only 8 months ownership as it was terrible. Rattles. new tyres, new gearbox various trim issues! The Boxster is brilliant in comparison and I do not regret my purchase ... only the financial loss on the RX8! ... it did not hold it's value either.

I've got a 986S and coincidentally enough traded in an RX8 for it. My roof rattles at high speed on the motorway; I'm afraid it seems to be one of those things although its not persistent enough to really bother me. I find turning up the stereo is an effective antidote!

Ordered Dec 04, delivered June 05 so it's been with me coming up 15 months. I think 1k miles a month is about average isn't it although when it comes to trade in I'm sure I'll be told otherwise!! Must admit I see a silver 997 most mornings on the way to work and I am beginning to really want one(although not silver), I daren't have a go in one as on the one hand it may be a let down (but I suspect not) or on the other hand I will then probably really really want one and take a big loss on the Boxster sooner than I should - I've decided for now it's best to admire from afar and carry on enjoying top down motoring.

If its a 'flapping noise' at around about 75mph then this is a well know 'characristic', and the cure is the opc put a foam insert into the first rib running across the roof (you can feel a groove in it by runnign your finger along it on the outside fabric)
