987 steering column vertical movement

Hi
Are there any other owners who have experienced about 5 to 10mm vertical movement on the steering column (I have double checked that the steering wheel adjustment locking lever is locked). My 987 Boxster S is a year old now but have only just noticed this movement, it probably explains why road undulations are so noticeable. Does any one else have this vertical play on the steering wheel or know if it is an issue with Boxster.

Whilst on the hunt for answers to Boxster traits, does anyone get the cloud of smoke on start up when the car is parked on an up slope.

Also is it common to have a low whine (any gear) in the 2600 to 3200 rpm band, noticeable from rear passenger corner of car.

Questions, questions

Many thanks
Paul

You should have absolutely NO play in the steering column at all. After adjusting mine (and I do this almost every time I get in as the misses is sharing the car at the moment), I check to see if it's locked by trying to waggle it about, and I know for sure that there isn't even a tiny bit of movement.

Smoke on start up shouldn't be a cause for concern as long as it clears shortly afterwards, especially if it's been parked on a slope.

The low speed whine has been reported as a common fault - I think it's a simple recal job so do a search on here to see what you can find out.

Many thanks for info and link will be talking to OPC very shortly.
Still think the Boxster is the dogs whotsits

Yes I noticed that when I took ours on test drive, but haven't had it since it was collected.

Confirmed by the opc that there should be nil movement so they have put the top end of steering column on order. Plus need to have the valve fix done for the oil sytem to stop cold engine chatter and they noticed the 3200rpm whine which they will investigate further.
I will follow up post when things get sorted.
