987 woes

Hi folks,

Wondered if I can tap into the collective Boxster knowledge on a couple of bugs. Persuaded my bosses boss to indulge in an 06 Boxster after years in the TT wilderness, but her purchase is turning a little sour.

1. Cobra tracker keeps acting up. The call centre keep calling her saying its been nikced when she has the fob on her. Shes tried all the usual tricks like keeping the fob apart from key/ cards/ phone/ loose change- sometimes makes a difference, other times, not a jot. Is there a common fault with the tracking system and has this been raised before, and if so, what worked? []

2. Engine makes a tappety rattle when its cold and dies down when its warmed up. Went back to OPC who fitted a new oil seal (not sure which one) which was a little better, but still audible inside and outside the car. Dont know much else to elaborate, but are the engines (2.7) known for being a little rattely when cold?

As I know a lot about 911s shes expecting me to be the fountain of all knowledge Porsche wise so need to brush up on my Boxster tech [8D]

Thanks for any help.

Craig

Has she tried the other card ? Changed the Battery in the card ?? Is the card she is using turned on ?? (The red LED flashes dimly every 8 seconds or so ) Final option is has she tried getting the System looked at by a approved installer (not an OPC, they subcontract these installs) ?? IME Cobra are pretty good at getting down to the bottom of false positive calls (as well as False negatives .. ie them not knowing you forgot the card again but they dont call you)... I found that they would work with you to "test" the system as long as you called them first and arranged it .. broad brush arrangements like .. "I'll be nicking my car this saturday .. sometime, call me when you discover it" I used to do a system check at least once a year .. in the early days every 6 months

yeah she's tried both cards and no difference. Also changed the batteries in both. Cars now gone back to Silverstone OPC and they've loaned her an S to make up for it!

My 987 S engine does make a mechanical ticking noise when cold, always has done from new and its normal with the engine and it dissipates when warm. It sounds like this is what you're describing to me.

Can't help with the tracker, my car hasn't got one!

My 987S is a bit tappety on cold start. Earlier in its life it was worse and would continue to be very tappety for the first 4 miles or so, following the engine revs. OPC replaced the valve set on one side and it was much better.
