991.1 Problems starting from cold.

Hi Everyone,
Hoping to get some ideas from you knowledgeable peeps.
No idea why, the old girl is suddenly struggling to start from cold.
Can take two or three attempts.
New battery this summer so "should" be OK. Plus the stop start is working fine.
Everything was good until she had a valve lift solenoid replaced.
Any help appreciated as local indies are really busy.
Cheers.

I had a similar experience with my 991.1 C2S and it turned out to be the fuel pump.

Thank you.
Still under warranty thankfully.
Been by a HUGE margin the least reliable car I have ever owned.
Speaks volumes when you have Land Rovers and Range Rovers in that list.
LOL.

Lee,

I’d agree with Terry that it sounds very much like a problem with the high pressure fuel pump, but your dealership will be able to confirm by running some diagnostics. It’s quite an expensive item so it’s just as well you have an extended warranty to cover costs.

Unfortunately so-called "premier” makes aren’t immune from unreliability problems. [:(]

Thanks Guys,
Three attempts to start this morning. Starting and stalling the first times. Heel and toe working in the end.
Provisionally booked in with Unique for Monday. They guys are fitting her in between other jobs. Fingers crossed she gets there under her own steam not on a low loader.
They have suggested it could be the relay, not convinced as once running she is fine.
I will get it on the PIWIS this afternoon, see if any stored faults. Nowt on the dash display, was expecting a reduced power warning.
Keeping my fingers crossed the part is in stock. Unlike the valve lift solenoid last month!!!
Sounds like a big job, in the worst location behind heat guards and possibly exhaust removal.

Hopefully I’m proved wrong Lee but from your last post it sounds as though a faulty HPFP is a more likely cause than just a sticky relay. The problem’s not unknown with the 9A1 DFI engines, so you’d hope that there’s stock in the UK for next day delivery.

Hi Everyone,
Thank you all for your input.
Quick update.
She became almost un-driveable this morning, as you would expect with fuel starvation then a sudden injection of fuel with almost full throttle. Interesting in stop start traffic!!!
Bless the guys at Porschetek Leeds, manged to limp the mile to them. I cannot sing their praise enough. They have rescued me over the years on many many occasions.
Once at Porschetek, a quick scan revealed both low pressure and high pressure problems. OPC Leeds unfortunately don't have one on the shelf, but have promised delivery 10am Monday.
The car has been shipped down this afternoon ready for the new part on Monday.
991.1/981.1 HPFP is another weak point. They have replaced quite. Together with Valve lift solenoids and the coolant temp sensors. All of the above parts are weak components, the latest versions have been improved by Porsche.
So my car has had all these replaced in the past three months.
Everybody, fingers crossed touch wood please, may I please please have a bit of trouble free driving ahead and hopefully regain the love and confidence in her.
Thank you again for your posts and trying to help.

Good to hear that a resolution to your problem is in sight Lee and ?? that’s an end to your spell of unreliability. There’s nothing worse for denting the enjoyment of ownership.

Jeff

NC35, many thanks for sharing your issues and more importantly keeping us up to date with the repair processes... Jeez one would think a fuel pump would be an off the shelf part..? I suspect just in time may have Covid related issues if not Brexit complications too.. Hmm..? Hope when you get it back having replaced all the seemingly usual suspects, that you see an end to the unreliability you type of..
