991.2 daily driver?

Hello all,

New to the forum as I very recently visited my local Porsche centre when I had a free Saturday and fell in love with a black 991.2 GTS in the showroom. Looking further a field into 2018 I'll likely be changing my car, but seeing as i was told a 911 Carrera is a 6 month wait, or 9 months for a Turbo, then if I chose Porsche I'd have to consider sooner than planned.

I wondered if any owners of 991.2 911's could share their views on using their cars as daily drivers? How's the road noise on our rubbish surfaced motorways? whats the ride quality like compared to other performance cars? General usability etc...? Must have options for daily driven cars? Paint quality against stone chips?

I do about 10-12k miles a year, mostly short trips, but also 2 1/2 hour trips to the Cotswolds once a month. Currently have the new shape C63 AMG Coupe, which is fantastic (but I like to change cars every 2-3 years). Previously had a new Nissan GTR, but that was hard work. Too bumpy, lots of road noise and the build materials are cheap. You'd get out after a 2 hour motorway drive feeling quite tired. So quite keen not to make that mistake again.

Thanks in advance
Lewis

I use my 991.2 4GTS as my every day car (previously 991.1 C2S everyday). The big attraction of this car is that it is an everyday car; easy to drive, docile yet beast-like when needed. It's happy at the supermarket or on the motorway. There's more space than most people realise both in load space and driving space as taller people are easily accommodated in the driving position than many other marques (like the Mercedes SL for instance). Road noise is hugely variable depending on road surface but at normal speed & normal roads it's quite acceptable. The seats are very comfortable for short or long journeys. As for ride - I would enquire which suspension/chassis control is on the car you're buying. On my 4GTS I have PASM -10mm and find it more comfortable than a car with PDCC for example. Performance is as you'd expect - awesome!
It will be a big change going from a C63AMG Cpe (I went from a 500CL) to a 911 but I have no doubts you'll love it. Hope this helps.

Easy to use as an everyday car - I commuted into London for many years in 911's clocking up 12 - 18k a year and never had a serious issue.

The current 991 is a lot quieter than the 997 but still there is some road roar on certain surfaces (I'm thinking the concrete sections on the M25 in particular). Electronic trickery is not quite up with Mercedes levels, but the satnav/Apple car play etc on the 991.2 is again a step up on previous models.

Extras for the daily grind? Cruise control obviously, lane change assist is sworn by those who have it, LED lights, speed limit display, rain sensors, reversing camera and Bose sound. And the seats that suit you best, sports seats plus in my case. All the rest is fun stuff.

Oh, and the paint chips like any other car...

I use my 991.2 GTS every day doing about 12K per year. I use the previous 991.1 4GTS the same. I have sports suspension, the ride is firm but very comfortable. My wife takes it to the supermarket, with no problem. I agree, on some road surfaces especially concrete, the noise is quite loud.

You will have no problem using it as an every day car.

It's all been said above, but I too am a very happy 991.2 4S owner, and use mine pretty much every day.

Many thanks for all the replies, positive start. I will get a few test drives sorted, hopefully a few longer ones, then progress from there. I have time to think and try cars. The 991.2 seems to tick a lot of boxes for me, only next thought is to see if the exhaust volume is aggressive enough for me.

Lewis, on your original point on delivery lead times, this is where its best to talk to a few dealers once you've settled on your model, as one factor is the order book they already have. i.e. if they have lots of customers with orders for the same model effectively you'll be waiting for a confirmed slot until those orders are cleared. I've just done this recently and had a range of 4-8 months for delivery
