991 front door speaker rattle?

Hi All

Just a quick check in to see if anyone else is suffering from speaker rattle? I have a 2012 991 CS, and I'm noticing an incredibly annoying rattle from the front speakers which dominates anything that's coming through the sound system, especially when v cold. A quick passenger-seat investigation suggests that it's actually not the speaker driver itself that's the problem, since the problem can be solved by pressing against the door just where it buts up to the side of the dashboard (and it's also fine when the door is wide open). It seems to be the case that the door itself is rattling against the dashboard.... I'm considering putting a packing piece in there, so that when the door is closed it fills the slight gap between door and dashboard-edge.

Just wondered whether this problem is unique to my car, or anyone else has experienced similar? (and found a resolution?? :)

Many thanks and Happy New Year to all

Cheers, Bill

Hi Bill,
I assume this is the standard speaker set, not Bose? I do not see that problem in my 991.1 2012 C2 which has the standard speakers.

Thanks Paul - yes this is the Bose speaker set (not sure if that is standard or not). My feeling is however that this is less about that actual speakers, and more about the clearance between the area where the door mates with the dashboard.... Not 100% sure, hence wanting to see if anyone else is suffering similar symptoms...

Cheers, Bill

Hi Bill,
You basically have 3 speaker options on a Porsche 911:
1) Standard speakers
2) BOSE® Surround Sound System
3) Burmester® HighEnd Surround Sound System
The depth of these speakers are most likely different, so you need somebody with a 991.1 with the Bose speaker option, to compare apples with apples...
Hope you find a solution! Good luck!

I had a similar rattle in my 991.1 C2S. I tracked it down to a plastic panel on the front leading edge of the door, which is hidden in the door frame when closed. Open the door as wide as it goes and check around the door strap - that thing that stops the door opening too far. There is a plastic panel surrounding that check strap where it enters the front edge of the door itself. Give that plastic panel a few taps with your finger tip and see if it rattles. That what was the cause of months of annoyance for me.

Good luck.

YES! That's it! Thanks so much David, I had pretty much given up hope of finding a resolution to this issue.

Really appreciate you taking the trouble to reply.

Now the key question..... what did you do to resolve the rattle? I'm thinking about something like squirting dry lube around the outside of the plastic panels (it actually happens on both doors on occasion)... Did you come up with a more elegant solution?

Cheers, Bill

Hi David

Sorry to trouble you again on this topic - you've certainly helped in identifying the cause of the issue. I just wonder if you had found a workable solution?

Thanks and regards, Bill

Sorry, I was away on business for a few days and haven't had the opportunity to reply.

First, I got a little piece of card (the thin cereal box stuff), and jammed a piece of folded card in the gap to stop it rattling. I wanted to check that it was. After a few days that bit fell out so I got a tube of silicon sealer and put a few spots at random points around the plastic panel that was rattling. I didn't go the whole way round because a few small spots are easy to peel off if I ever needed to. In hindsight, a few small strips cut out of duct tape would have done the same job.

So glad that you got to the bottom of the rattle!

"if it can't be fixed with gaffer tape, you haven't used enough....."

Many thanks again Dave - very helpful indeed. Hope you're enjoying your 991 as much as I am mine.

Warm regards, Bill

I might have to steal that phrase from you hahahaha!

And yes, the 991 GTS is proving to be the car for me. A match made in Stuttgart!...however, I find my eye wandering towards spy shots of the new GT3. ARGH!

GTS - lovely. There is no way that the GT3 will sound as good as your current ride (even with the rattles!) and isn't that at least half of the appeal of 911s?

Thanks again for your help

Cheers, Bill
