992 wifi Apple CarPlay

I have followed various threads and web site re inability to access wifi Apple CarPlay which on the early 992s is not installed and so a usb cable has to be used to get it on the PCM. Other than giving up and just carrying on using a cable to the USB port, has anyone used a wifi dongle such as the Carlinkit usb dongle that attaches to the USB port and gives wifi Apple carPlay to the PCM? It is an annoying lack of accessibility that Porsche just seem wholly uninterested in fixing. Not being a techie, I do not understand why it is not a software update as you can connect by wifi to the Porsche Connect apps!
Any useful hints on a usb dongle would be appreciated. What one wants is a simple attachment that does not require taking the car apart!

Whilst I have little information to support this, from a technical perspective, my belief is that the early models (as mine is also) only have a 2.4GHz wifi hotspot. My understanding is that wireless/wifi CarPlay requires a 5GHz hot spot which suggests that there is a hardware difference between the PCM fitted to earlier/later 992s. Having read some US forums, I have seen images showing both 2.4GHz and 5GHz SSIDs showing up on some cars and not others; mine only broadcasts one SSID. Whether I am correct or not, I am unsure.

I did obtain confirmation from Porsche that wifi CarPlay will only work on cars manufactured from Week 25 2019 (ie from 17 June 2019) and cannot be retro-fitted; which itself suggests a hardware difference rather than simply software.

Like you, I find it annoying to not have this feature which would be helpful/useful on short journeys. On longer journeys I don't have an issue as I would tend to plug in my phone in order to charge it.

I doubt that there is any form of USB dongle that can be simply plugged in to create a wifi CarPlay solution.

You are correct for a wireless car play you need a 5ghz WiFi. My previous 992 MY2020 did not have a 5gHZ WiFi only a 2.4GHZ. My new 992 MY2021 has a 5GHZ and a 2.4GHZ WIFi and the apple car play connects as soon as you switch on the ignition.

Whether you have an early 992 or any other car that has CarPlay but where you have to wire your phone to the USB connector in the car to use Apple CarPlay then consider a Carlinkit 2 Plus. Mine arrived this morning and having followed the simple instructions to (1) connect the phone via bluetooth to the PCM and having (2) paired (note the phone is not attached to the car in any way from start to finish by a usb wire) the two then thereafter you have wifi Apple CarPlay in your to use eg Waze etc and can leave you phone in your jacket pocket. Simple and relatively cheap. About £77 if you order direct from Carlinkit CarPlay Store direct. Simples!!!!
