I am about to go see a 993 2S '96. Have seen photos and can see that rear grill does NOT have a split down the centre. My understanding was all S spec cars have this as standard. Is this not so? Interest is basically if it should have this and does why not and a question to ask owner re potential historic accident damage. Grateful if anyone knows the form here.

Yes it should have a split grill the same colour as the body. I seem to remember they have special coloured wheels as well but I can't find any reference to this so perhaps my memory is bad.
What you should do is get the list of options (from under the bonnet or in the service book) before you go and use one of the option list decoders to print out a list to take with you so you can check against it for anything else missing (any help with the link for this anyone as I am not currently at home?).

All of the 'S' models are wide bodied, and have most of the options that the Turbo has including the 18" wheels, however there are a couple of differences between the 2S and the 4S. The 4S has the big red brake calipers (as the Turbo) the 2S has standard black ones, the 4S has a black plastic rear grill that is not split nor is it colour coded as with the 2S. The 4S (as the Turbo) has 18" wheels but are hollow on the rear of the spokes, this is to do with weight saving due to the extra required for full 4 wheel drive. The 4S models tend to be much more sought after due to there rareness especially a good one! These are the main differences that I am aware of if anyone can add to these, then by all means enlighten me!
2S should have split grill,,, black standard calipers, unless ordered with red, 18" hollow spokes if ordered with turbo wheels, should have 'S' emblem on dash gauges,
grills were painted to match colour of car,, but remember it is porsche we are talking about,, they will pretty much (or at least some dealers will) sell you the new porker with options to suit yourself,,, so check the options list on the cars paperwork,,,
