OK, I need to know from anyone with a 3.8 993 Cup.

Does it have Aluminium doors?

The reason I ask is the Paul Frere book says it does on page 275.

Can anyone confirm?

Charles

Truly frightened to take a bet against adict Paul Frere.................Cup Car wings are straight off 993 with headlamp washer holes ,they came out before 993 rs existed , neither rs nor cs have Aluminium doors but both have wings without washers specially made ,993 gt2 ,except for the Evos have aluminium doors ..................we need Thomas J or Rob K to tell us .........ands i saw Robs car this morning , why did nt u ask yesterday !

I got a reply today from a dealer saying the 993Cup Cars did not have Alu doors.

The 964RS 3.8 does and Pauls book says that is how they kept the weight down on the new CUP 993.

I love to sort out the genuine 993 enthusiasts from the also rans! ;O)

My info just says that the cup sport was 270 kilo lighter than the 94' ROW Carrera , but not how they did it , but that is a lot to shave off , so Paul maybe right , and they were quite early cars , so if the 964 does , its possible , some of those cars could have bits from anything on them by now , don't forget the factory was not past sticking a few non standard bits on cars to get them out of the factory if pushed for delivery

i actually thought abt this ,sad, wholeheartedly accept they would take things off the shelf at random for Cup cars etc BUT i ve felt a few 993 Cup car doors and they dont feel like mine ...................NON ALLOY ....................i reckon ............

OK cud nt stand it any longer , rang the guy up , went downstairs , STEEL DOORS!.......................ITS A BARELY USED CUP CAR mainly track days from Sweden and now uk ............................

I can confirm categorically that my 993 Cup has steel doors. I originally thought they were aluminium but they are steel as I checked them with a magnet.

once did that to a mates Batmobile [3.3 csl] he has nt stopped laughing! For sure if urs are steel then a straight cup car is !

Interesting! So where did the quoted weight loss come from?

Axle must weigh more so where did the saving come from?

Off to read the Frere book again! Thanks Vic et al!

U ve had ur money s worth plan to sleep tonight, new anorak in the post?..............................i ve sworn by those books for years ...............oh Dear!

993 cups as said steel doors, sadly.even the 993rsr has steel doors.
Weights are a interesting one,the factory seem to miss a few KG.
They did have thin glass like the rs,plastic side windows, lightweight elec loom, mag wheels, lighter engine, one seat etc
underseal and trim count for a lot.

993 Cup 1100kg
964 Cup 1120kg

I assumed after reading Paul's book this was due to the Alu doors.

It is not! The 64 Cup has single seat too. Possibly the L and M series had standard glass and the 993 perspex.

I'll email Weissach. Does nobody else check the facts in these books? ;O)

Vic I am disappointed you did not spot this error!

My plan is to buy one of each and weigh them! ;O)

Standard elec seats are heavy , glass , electric motors on windows , think bonnet is not steel , rear seats , suppose it all adds up , don't forget they are comparing to a standard car

Not sure what all the differences are, and I have never weighed my Cup car, but we did weigh jimmyslr's 993RS Clubsport and that came out at 1220kg with no fuel. Differences between this and a Cup car?
- it is one of the few Clubsports with aircon, so deduct that,
- it has the spare wheel (which the Cup cars don't),
- it doesn't have a heater (like the Cup cars),
- it has glass side windows (plastic on the Cups),
- it has both seats (Cup has one)
then we prob get to more spurious that I'm just thinking from the top of my head stuff like...
- Cups have the smaller 36A battery
- no bonnet latches (Cup has bonnet pins)
- it has front sidelights (Cups have air vents for front brakes)
- not sure differences in wheel weights - jimmyslr had BBS aluminium wheels, the cups have mag speedlines
- no side indicators on the Cup
- against this, the Cup has a bigger roll cage (eg double door bars vs single on Clubsport) and it has airjacks

Also remember the Cup has a 70l fuel tank and most Clubsports I know (if not all?) have the bigger 90l tank, so be careful when comparing weights with fuel.

Hopefully this goes some way to explaining the differences.

Guys we seem to have lost the plot. Apples with Oranges.

Frere's book is talking about the weight difference between 2 Cup cars!

964 Cup and 993 Cup.

I think I have managed to work it out at 3am last night( It was windy).

The early 964 Cup uses standard 82 & 9.5" Cup 1s weighing ~64Kg ( 18" Speedline Mags only fitted in 1993MY).

It has glass all round. 993 had Mag split rims and perspex windows as standard. Shame about the lack of Alu doors!

This will make the difference I guess.
