993 C2 at Northways - anyone know N286 NOU?

Afternoon all... Just wondering if anyone knows the car at Northway ? Looks v tidy considering the mileage, just wondering if anyone knows the car or the previous owner ?

Yes looks okay, maybe a bit pricey given the miles? have not checked, but did porsche do sport classic 2's in 17"? thought they were only in 18's

Seriously overpriced I would say .sold my 993 3 yrs ago with half the miles as good condition for less than that !!

There is one for sale at OPC Chester for a wopping 45k. Think it will be there a long long time!!

Those are 18s (as per the text), as I had them fitted to Pegasus originally.
If they are 50 offset, they only just fit on the rear.
My advice is to speak to Ray Northway.
Very honest and will tell you all there is to know about the car.
Then can be trusted to look after it for you.
I bought a 964 from him in 2008 and know others who have gone to him for years.
Late Varioram, FSH, Nice colour combo....sports seats
For me, it's good value.....just wish it was LHD !!
Good luck,

Jon

Another vote for Northway's - a great company to do business with and, as the previous poster says, very honest. I have been taking my 993 C4 there for years and had a full engine rebuild late last year - I've always felt the advice they've given me has been the right advice - so I'd go and talk to Ray.

Afternoon all... Just wondering if anyone knows the car at Northway?

Looks reasonable considering mileage - although I'd personally do away with the "˜Playskool' steering wheel [:'(] ... looks like it will squeak out a jaunty tune if you grip it hard enough[;)]

Many thanks for all the replies!

Valuation is a tricky one as I think good cars with around 70-80k miles seem to be trading around the mid £20s? And something with c.50-60k miles could easily be mid-£30s or higher ?

I've been keeping an eye on 993s for awhile, and my car of choice (Manual 993 C2 Coupe w/Varioram) seems something of a rare animal... Must admit, I didn't think the car was too far away from fair value.

I did speak to Ray, and the car has had a lot of money spent in the past 2-3 yrs, with works including
- all new suspension/bushes
- new brakes
- new tyres
- etc.

Hasn't had any engine work, but Ray said that it is a very good example and drives very well. I've lays heard good things about Northway, and agree that they seem a very honest company.

Anton - wil drop you a PM as I'd be interested to know more about the rebuild (costs, possible enhancements, etc).

Thanks again for all the replies!

There seem to be problems with PM's so I don't know if you've tried to send me one but here's a quick synopsis on the changes to the car.

Arena Red 993 C4 Varioram with standard 17" wheels "" 140K "" must have had it for well over ten years now and it's used as a daily drive. It was originally serviced at the Reading OPC (where I bought it) but since then, and for most of its life, it's been looked after by Northway's (often by the same guy who looked after it at the OPC!). It's only let me down once in all that time - see engine rebuild below. Plus it has working A/C!

I tend to take the approach of getting something extra out of adversity "" that way you feel "˜better' about spending money when you end up with something better that the bit that broke! You'll see this theme running through the upgrades below.

Has RSR boxes from Carnewal and also a sports air box "" the RSR boxes were "˜forced' on me when the tail pipe fell off one of the boxes (3 years ago) "" so rather than replace with standard Porsche parts "¦. Not sure there is much difference in performance but it sounds better.

The engine rebuild (at 130K) was required because the offside camshaft snapped "" bottom end and pistons were OK "" unbelievable really. Nobody was able to throw any light on the cause (I was in slow traffic in London at the time) "" very very rare and many engines happily run to much higher mileages so don't let my experience put you off! So it was re-ringed, heads tidied and RS cams fitted with the older style locking lug on the cams to avoid any risk of slippage. All the various seals and gaskets were obviously changed during reassembly. The engine runs really smoothly now with plenty of pull "" amazing how it had deteriorated over the years. Also really oil leak free as well "" a testament to the care taken in the engine reassembly by Ray and his team.

Whilst the engine was out the clutch was changed and since the suspension was in bits that was rebuilt as well "" lowered springs, new bushes and better dampers. This transformed the handling of the car "" again amazing how it had deteriorated over the years.

Finally it was "˜live' remapped by Wayne Schofield "" although this will need to be revised as we subsequently found that a Varioram flap was not responding properly (Northway's have fixed that now).

All in all I consider that the running costs have been quite low (even when you factor in the significant costs last year). If I'd had a "˜standard' car, I'd have been suffering much greater "˜losses' in depreciation and overall servicing would have been about the same "" plus (and a big plus!) I'd have had nowhere near the fun I have driving the 993 every day!

Let me know if you need any further information "" or you could always ask Ray or Paul (Stacey) as they've done all the work on the car "" except for the live remap! Just mention my name and they'll know the car.

Anton, thank you so much for the detailed reply much appreciated. I guess you didnt get my PM, will resend the now.

I've decided to proceed with the car, largely due to the following factors
- Northway
- Ray Northway himself
- Northway

I cannot stress how impressed I have been by the honest approach they they take, and Ray's personal integrity. As we went over the car, he pointed out bits that I hadn't even noticed and will be taking care of them before collection. He has also called me after we agreed the items that needed attention, as he found a few things that needed sorting. That type of honestly is a very very rare thing these days.

Should be picking up the car on Tuesday and really looking forward to it. Sold my other car on Thursday and was really gutted to see it go, so can't wait to get the 993 on-board!

Thanks again for your post Anton!
