993 C2 coupe (1996) : Immobiliser and Alarm

This are two questions from one who doesn't know much (anything?) about car electrics - so please forgive the possibility of this being a stupid question!

I have an immobiliser (the one that slips in a slot in the dashboard) which is in good condition - and I understand what this does, security-wise. I also have a Porsche PA 2000 alarm fitted, operated by a chunky black fob with twin pressure pads (press one to lock doors/activate the alarm; press the other to unlock doors/deactivate the alarm). It is this fob which has seen better days, and I wonder if such items are still available from Porsche?

Is anyone able to say what additional safety impact this alarm system will have on the car, remembering that the immobiliser is fully operational at this time.

All thoughts gratefully received.

Hi. I had one of my two bottom fobs with a problem ( I think that the mechanic had brake fluid or similar on his hands when car serviced) the rubber buttons became very spongy and soft had similar problem with my astra van. I was told by my OPC that they are no longer available. However they did manage to find one for me that was lying around. If you do find a supplier please let me know as I would like to have a second spare for the future. sorry I can't be more helpful
All the very best

I got new rubber button from Hamilton and Palmer. They didn't have many left the other year either

Thanks both, for your replies.

I contacted Hamilton & Palmer (info@hamilton-palmer.co.uk; phone 01732 760022) and spoke to their Office Manager (a very helpful lady called Margaret Heather).

There are two types of handset; a large chunky one like mine (small red LED on the front, three screws to the rear) and a smaller one (no LED, one screw to the rear) and they offer new replacement handsets of both types for £54 each, including p+p. They also offer "refurb kits" which comprise rubber buttons, battery, plastic casing and screws - into which the existing circuit board is inserted. The main consideration appears to be that you have an existing working handset, because this is needed to allow the new handset to 'learn' the codes.

I have bought one new handset and a refurb kit, and they even offer a repair service.

A great result, I'd say.

John
