993 C2 COUPE RIDE QUALITY

Can anyone help/advise please?

I have just become the proud owner of a 1996 C2 coupe with 50k miles and in vey good general condition. However one of the previous 3 owners has fitted a Bilstein PS9 suspension kit which, whilst giving great handling, makes the ride quality much worse than my old 911 3.2 model.
The car is lower than standard but I can't say by how much. It is also fitted with Porsche 18" split rims (7.5 and 10) with Yokohama AVSport tyres 225/40 front and 265/35 rear. My quandry is, keep the 18" wheels which look good or bite the bullet and buy some 17" cup 2s in the hope that the ride quality would be better. I don't really want to go to the expense of reverting the whole spring/damper set up to standard.

Your views would be much appreciated

Thanks Bruce

ps does anyone have a surplus pair of standard silencers for a C2 they would like to sell?

Hi

Great choice of car [;)] but 18" wheels will make the ride more harsh than 17" ( you are also supposed to fit a steering rack brace with 18" wheels - check out the 993 FAQ section for more info)

The PS9's are expensive, but have adjustable compression & rebound settings - can you check which setting they are on currently, as I think there is a range of 9 settings so you should be able to find a good balance between handling and ride.

The ride will also obviously be impacted by the spring rates - if someone has installed lowering springs they will probably be harder than the originals - is there any information on the make of springs that you have?

Pete

If you sold it, i think you could make enough to cover 50% plus of the cost of renewing your shocks and springs with factory mo33 suspension(not if you go to an opc though) ,although it will never be as soft as a 3.2 and yes 17" wheels will make a significant improvement to the comfort as well.

Regarding std silencers my boss has a pair which he never quite got round to sending back to carnewal and i guess he would sell them, i think he would want around £130 each for them and they were off a 53k documented c4s(96) car ,Don't worry about them being off a widebody car they are all the same,I think they are the gillet brand not the bischoff.

Isn't the PSS9 kit from Bilstein supplied complete with their own springs?? AFAIK it's a complete coilover setup, just like the KW and PSS10 kits.

There is a pair of low mileage silencers on Pistonheads porsche parts from a carrera.

Try adjusting the settings on the bilsteins, they are very adjustable. 17's would make a significant difference if that doesn't work

Many thanks for all of the very helpful replies, just what I hoped for from fellow 993 enthusuiasts. I can't answer the points about the current settings (ie 1 - 9) on the Bilstein PS9s but will ask Ray Northway to check it out at my next visit. However its good to hear that something around 6 might be ok (thanks Maurice). It seems that the general consensus is that changing to 17" wheels would be a good option, so I must start looking for a good set of original cup 2s and sell the 18s later.
Thanks to both for the pointer to Pistonheads, I'll follow that up.
Cheers

Hi Carrerasport,
Thanks for your reply and advice. Regarding the pair of silencers, I am interested depending where they are located. Can you give me a contact for your boss please?
Regards
Bruce

Hi Pete,
Thanks for your reply - I don't have any info on the springs, as the invoice just describes the work as fitting a PS9 kit, with new lower front wisbones, ball joints and steering arms - nearly £2.4k all told! I'll ask Ray Nothway to advise at my next visit.
Regards
Bruce
