I recently noticed that my engine almost never starts on the first turn of the key. The starter motor whirrs briefly without engaging(?) and then, as it slows to a halt, appears to stop abruptly as if engaging. The second attempt is always successful and normal. What is happening the first time and is his the beginning of a problem that I need to fix? I fear I will get to the point where the first turn will be repeated and I end up stranded!! Thanks. Charles

993 C2 starter motor issue

That will be the one way clutch on the drive pinion slipping , part of the starter motor, it has a one way clutch to avoid the engine overspinning the motor when the engine actually fires up with the starter still engaged. they do fail in that way in lots of cars occasionally. I am not sure if you can buy that part from bosch or Porsche separately, but it is a replaceable component of the starter motor if you can get a new one. i'd look on bosch webkatalogue or ask a bosch service agent about it but you would need the bosch part number off your starter motor to make the agents job easy.
