The additives in the non-supermarket super unleaded also help keep the insides clean.
The choice of having it run as Porsche intended or saving a few pence is a no brainer as far I'm concerned.
a good friend of mine who better remain nameless but has spent a career in the oil industry (not working for Shell) tells me that the Shell high octane is the one to go for and one of the very few where you are actually guaranteed to get that companys product unadulterated out of the pump.
I use it all the time but if I end up needing to put in a top-up of 95 when unable to get Nitro Plus at the pump, the difference is instantly evident.
Fuel economy is indeed improved too, but only a tiny wee amount, almost negligible in fact. Worked it out once by anorakishly doing the same routes in the same weather conditions with the same loading on the car, same speed etc etc, compared between the 2 octane grades.
Haven't gone to the extent of getting my slide rule out to calculate whether the extra few pence difference per litre between the 2 grades actually cancels itself out due to covering more distance with the more expensive one, but it's as near as makes no difference, so is good enough for me []
After all, it's the smiles per gallon that are improved with the 98 octane, much more than the miles per gallon, so it's well justified. Proper blips of the throttle, surging through the 40-70 zone to overtake, double declutching to take a corner, just as the maker intended. Marvellous stuff []

As an owner of a "modern" Porsche this doesn't affect me, but I would be concerned about the high ethanol content (10%?) in lower octane fuels which can lead to significant fuel system damage in older vehicles such as yours.
Personally, I'd stick to something like Shell super unleaded which I believe has only 5% ethanol content.

I use Shell Nitro Super Blah Blah also but still have concerns about the ethanol content and it's affect on older engines. Having corresponded with Shell even they seem unsure of the exact ethanol content in there fuel and would only confirm it's less than 10%. They did confirm it varies across the country and that 'up North' fuel has less ethanol in than the south, not really sure how that works or the logistics of adding ethanol but recent legislation means that ethanol content in fuel can be and soon will be 10%.
Bad news for the 993.........
until the end of 2016. Apparently there 2.5 million vehicles still on the road that are not compatible with E10 fuel.
but now its nitro + every time !
it just make sence using the best !!!!
