993 C2S vs 993 C4S

Hi All,
Apart from the obvious RWD vs 4WD are there any other major differences between the 2 versions of 993s?
I read somewhere that the 4WD system adds 100kg to the weight of the car. This together with the increased transmissions losses must make the C4S slightly slower. Is that the compromise for having the safety of 4WD?
Does anybody know how the Porsche 4WD system works? Is it mainly RWD biased until it determines slip? What sort of percentages of drive are transfered? Is it really necessary to have 4WD in a 993 since the general concensus is towards RWD for pure sportscars? Are the 2 cars a noticably different to drive? Is one system more proned to problems than the other?
Are these cars only available in certain colours? I have only ever seen a handful of colours for these models and these seemed quite conservative, eg. black, blue, arena red. Not that I want an outrageous colour like yellow but I just want to know what is out there.

As an owner of outrageous pastel yellow Carrera S--I can say that the main differences between the 2 and the 4 S are the 4S came standard with AC and witht he Turbo look 18" alloys--the 2S came with optional hollow spoke alloys. The 4S came with big red calipers as std--the 2s came withe turbo front calipers (black) and the standard calipers at the rear. The 2s came witht he split spoiler and the 4S came with the standard spoiler and the 4WD system added 50 kg to the weight of the vehicle.

In terms of performance--it depends where you read--generally 0-100kph was recorded at 0.1 secs quicker int he 4S--academic really and the top speeds of both cars was recorded as 3mph less than the std car due to increased frontal are.

On the 4wd system, the extra weight is 50kg not 100kg which was the weight of the 964 system. The C4 is actually faster 0-60 as it does not wheelspin, but that is academic.

I would defy most people to know that they are driving a 4wd variant as the car basically drives through the back wheels until it senses a loss of traction. Only when pushing hard through corners, and I mean hard do you become aware of slight o/steer.

Re your question about 4wd being necessary. Remember that the turbo comes with it as standard.

I see what you mean about the acceleration times with the lack of wheelspin.

Steve - do you mean that the 2S was supplied with the optional 18" cup 3 hollow spokes (so the wheels look the same as on the 4S) as standard or was this an option for that car?

As for the brakes - are the "big red" brakes also the same as the turbo brakes apart from being red on the front? Do the rear brakes vary? Are they all drilled?

When you say there is the standard spoiler on the 4S, that is the automatic one that fits flush and that raises at speed, right? And the 2S has what looks like an arch attached to the back, but the grill does not move automatically at speed. Is that correct?

I know I am going to have to drive these cars back to back before making my final decision. It seems though the 4S really is the more desirable one of the two, I guess that explains the premium. Although as far as I understand they made less of the 2S so this should be more unique.
 
Both spoliers lift at speed - the 4S has a standard spoiler with black grills like the standard Carrera but the 2S has colour coded spilt (in the centre) grill.

Brakes on the 4S were big reds asper the Turbo - 2S has standard black Carrera brakes.

Most buyers of the 2S selected the 18" wheel Turbo twist wheels which would have been hollow spokes. This can be checked by getting the part number and asking OPC to run it throught the computer. Also the hollow spokes have a metal air valve that is visible flush to the wheel. Quite a few cars have the replicar non-hollow and recently Porsche had my car in for some work and the front hollow spokes when missing. I noticed they were copies from the air valve.

Their is also less space in the front of a 4
I noticed recently someone mentioned that the dials have the S logo on them, well this is not the case all the time. My 2S has factory fitted silver dials with no S logos.

Please feel free to ask any questions.... I spent a long time hunting down my car and researched the S models for a long time.
