993 C4S Upgrade

I'm now in the market to spend a little on upgrading my 97 model C4s.
I've read most of the articles but am keen to here from anyone who has modified there cars and whether they are happy it was a good improvement?

Clutch - Has anyone actually driven there car with standard clutch and then fitted new LWF and RS clutch? Were there any problems with tick over or stalling? Is the extra nose or rattle acceptable?

Suspension - Anyone tried the Roock set-up (HR springs/Bilsteins) from JZ Machtech? Not interested in PSS9's and race set-up any suggestions?

Performance chip - Again anyone had there standard 285Bhp Vario ram car modified and by who? Is it worth doing or best left standard?

Regards
Andy

Clutch - Not had it done but it is noisier and is prone to stalling, but pick up is better
Suspension - Consider the Bilstein HD's & H&R sport springs, cheaper and just as good. I have these fitted and they transformed the car
Performance Chip - Would not bother with an off the shelf chip, much better to have the likes of 9M rewrite your ECU.

I had RS clutch and LWF fitted recently, its one the best mods you can do. I was expecting a lot noise from the transmission but it more like music to my ears(very subjective)[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"] So hear we go;[FONT=verdana,geneva"]1. There is a slight rattle on tick over from the LWF[FONT=verdana,geneva"]2. When you are off-cam (travelling lets say 30mph ) in 4th upwards there is a coffee grinding noise if you try to accelerate, to avoid this change down to a lower gear [FONT=verdana,geneva"]3. Can consume more petrol (driving on all those country lanes[:)]) because you just cannot believe that this small mod can transform the car so much.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]4. I had no stalling issues with the Vario Ram( MY96 onwards), the biting point is much higher takes a while to get use to it.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]5. For spirited driving/ Track etc revs fall very quickly when "on-Cam" and changing gear, so practicing H&T or "blipping" the throttle is advised.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]If all the above is fine then go for it, if not still go for it[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I'm told if you do nothing else you should, at the bare minimum do the suspension, most people have gone for Bilteins HDs with different flavours of springs, so along as you change it you are onto a winner.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Chip jobs I'm afraid, I think they are a waste of money, I luv the acceleration of the VarioRam I can't see how a chip job is going vastly improve acceleration, I would put this money into changing the seats for sports version, now this is something I hate about the 993, most 993 the foot-rest is very worn, because most drivers use this as a brace along with the steering wheel [:D][FONT=verdana, geneva"]Alex[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Totally agree on the RS Clutch and LWF (also make sure the RMS is replaced while this work is done - its a couple of quid and well worth the peace of mind). This is far and away the best mod you can do for your car in terms of performance. It will feel like a chip mod (and then some!) - throttle response is electric and addictive. Make sure you treat yourself to a set of RSR exhausts and the Sports Airbox (or drill the current one - the pattern for the holes is already on it).

As for susp - the Roock setup is quite expensive, save some cash and get the Bilstein HDs (with extra thread from Gert) and pair them up with a set of M030 springs - you cant go wrong with that - brilliant! Add a front GT2 or RS strut brace as well - essential.

As for the chip - I havent had it done but have heard good things about AMD - esp with regards to varioram. Have also seen good things about 9m's chip fettle; you need to make sure that its a custom job for your car and not an off the shelf malarky like Superchips or something...

I would also do each mod one at a time to gauge its improvement.

Best of luck -

My 2 peneth:

LWF and clutch: mine's booked in next month, dual mass given up the ghost - can't wait!
Chipping - I've had 2 previous 993's remapped by 9M and in my opinion the best bhp £500 can
buy! noticable difference across the range - up to 315bhp on one car totally standard.

Others you just know you'll want at some point?
RSR's
Xenons
100 cell cats
Short shifter (not on the 4 wheel drive cars I've read)
3 spoke steering wheel
M030 or similar
Hollow spokes
on and on and on.....

Andy - if you want I'll report back on the RS flywheel and clutch, let u know how it suits the 4S in particular, mine is a late '96 car.

I agree - LWF and clutch are (relatively!) good value for money and feel great. I find it a bit too on/off for everyday driving but great on a run and no odd stalling issues on a 97 car. The rattles from underneath were a bit disconcerting to start with though....
