993 Camshaft Wanted

I've just had the offside camshaft (the one driving the steering pump) fail - sheered in two places! Thankfully no damage to pistons, barrels, heads or valves but obviously I now need a replacement camshaft. Anybody got one they don't need - it's for a 93 C4 Varioram but I think they are all the same.

Hi Mark

No idea of the cause - the car's at Northway's and they've never seen one fail before. No other damage at all - and I was doing about 10 mph down a side road in London when it went. Oil pressure/temp was spot on both before and immediately after. The car's got 130K on the clock and has always been PC/Northway's serviced. Called Porsche GB to see if they had heard of this before (ie should I change the other shaft) - since this caused a complete power steering failure it could potentially be a safety issue. They weren't overly interested but promised to check it out with Germany - still waiting to hear back.

Thanks for the suggestions for sourcing this - the Ebay one required re-profiling and another member kindly checked the ones he had and the part number didn't match.

Northway's data says I need 993 105 246 09

So still looking if anyone has one hiding in their garage!

Regards
Anton

have you thought about 964 cams, as the sprockets are keyed rather than bolted, know nothing about profiles though, was something I was thinking of doing on my car when it came to rebuild time. Have been told since that they are as rare as that rocking horse stuff, cos others have the same idea[:(]

That's a thought (964 cams) - had also thought about sports cams - the cost (new) for a pair will only be a little more than one new 993 cam from Porsche (see my other, later, post). You can get the sprockets & keys new but I think they're about £500 in total.

yep , but are the sprockets on the sports cams on keys or bolted on like standard 993 cams, I thought of going to the 964 cams to avoid the bolted on sprockets
