993 - changing the gear lever gaiter and rubber bellows

I am trying to replace the rubber bellows and leather gear lever gaiter on my manual 993.

Can anyone tell me how to remove the gear lever knob from the metal operating shaft?
 
You don't need to, believe it or not normally the new gator should pull over the gear knob. I know it doesn't seem possible but it is does, practice when you pull of the old one.
 
But he wants to replace the gearshift knob and rubber. If its a C2 its just a very tight friction fit, grab it and pull, watch you face though! If its a C4 the is a "D" clip holding it on, just unclip it.
