993 front to back movement when lifting off the loud pedal

Hi all,

I've always had a slight problem getting a quick start from a standstill. Basically it's difficult to get the clutch/accelerator movement smoothly enough to fire off the starting line. For example trying to get a clean getaway from traffic lights ...... I kinda have to slip the clutch more than needed to make a smooth takeoff. It can be embarrassing when the transit van next to you is pulling away quicker. After that pulling through the gears is fine, it's just 1st to 2nd.

Anyway, last year I replaced my original worn engine mounts for C4 ones (mine is a C2) and that helped alot with takeoff and gearchange, the sharpness at clutch takeup was much less and much better.

What I'm still suffering from is basically I'm accelerating in 2nd gear and if for some reason I liftoff the throttle, you can hear a 'bump' sound .... ie it feels like the transmission (or something) is moving back to front (or is that front to back), You can drive around it by being easier on how you drive the car. For anyone who has driven a LR defender, it feels like when the fourwheel drive and the props engage when accelerating...... unless in that circumstance your easy with the clutch takeup

Could this be caused by a worn mount on the transmission, and if so which one, or is there another engine mount forward of the engine that I've never heard of?

Hope you can help, and hopfully the above makes sense. Sorry for the waffle.

Hi, are you sure the mounts are still done up correctly? Might be worth a check. I had that pRoblem when I first got my car. Good luck!

Does it happen in neutral if you whack the throttle? If so it could be the DMF on the way out, when spinning at 5000 revs it wont be a problem

Thanks guys for your responses.

To answer your questions:

1, Yes mounts are nice and tight
2, No nothing unusal when reving in neutral

The problem only arises whilst driving. Looking on the exploded view of the 993 parts diagram, I wondered if it was either item 23 or 16. Item 16 is the gearbpx bracket, ithem 23 is the gearbox silencer block. Could be either of these (or both) that restrict movement of the transmission?
Finally, if this is the case, are they renewable without removing the transmission?
Many thanks

Hi,

Mines a bit like that, i think its play in all the drivetrain, like gears, driveshafts, etc as well as gearbox mounts.
I fitted C4 engine mounts and it helped a bit but the problems still there.
Its worse 1st to 2nd if you give it some welly, you almost get a bang when you pull it out of 1st

Heeeeeelp someone

Yessssssssssssss, this is exactly what I have, I'm not alone in this.

I have also fitted C4 mounts. I also get the kind of 'bang' if your not careful with the clutch action ................. sounds bloody awful doesn't it.

What mileage has yours done?

I have the same issue with my 94 C2 manual. Only just got the car but doesn't look like, from the paperwork, that the mounts have been changed.........they are on the list! Will probably stick to OEM C2 mounts, after all some Engineer no doubt spent a lot of time designing them....

Hi Colin. That wont cure the problem, it just helped the clutch pickup, stopped it being so snappy.

Ref the C4 mounts. I was of the same opinion, that was until OPC recommended them over the C2s and at half the price.

Mine has only done 38,000 miles but im wondering if someone has been dropping the clutch.
However the condition of the car suggests it has been very well looked after all its life
