About to go 993 hunting "" would be grateful for feedback on what actually constitutes a full and proper service history. Does this consist of minor/major services every 10k or is there a time element also ie 10k or every year "" whatever comes first?

There's an annual service if you don't do the miles. Therefore, you should at least see something done once a year minimum (which includes an oil change).

Ideally you want to see the service records stamped every year, brake fluid change stamped every 3 years, long life corrosion check stamped every year and air bag check stamped at 4 and 8 years.

What is difficult is to determine what services were carried out. The service garage only has to tick either "Vehicle maintenance" or "Yearly maintenece" not indicate what service was carried out. Therefore unless the car comes with the receipts for each service it is almost impossible to determine the work carried out. It's not explicit in the service book but it seems to be written in such a way that if the garage has ticked "Vehicle maintenence" it had at least a 12000 mile service.

With cars now approaching 9 years old you should be looking for receipted evidence of 24000 or 48000 mile services. 24000 is when spark plugs are replaced and 48000 is when gearbox oil is replaced. If you can't find one you should probably budget a 48000 service into your calculations when looking a the price of the car.

Some seem to and some not. A have a FPSH on mine with AFN and they have not written the type on any just the date and mileage.

Mine has a plethora of stamps (JCT, Rivervale, Merlin, HR Owen and now JZ) and lucky enought to have 12, 24 and 48's noted - I think they followed the guidance of the first stamp. You might be lucky and get this detail.

As an aside, in it's earlier life my car did go 2 years without a service (4,000 miles covered during this time.) Not ideal, but perhaps the annual service wasn't available. I know Hatfield don't do one which is why I went to JZ this year.

If the car is 10 years old, it should have another airbag stamp too.
