993 Gearbox Oil

I've just changed my manaul gearbox oil during a routine service as I was unsure the last time it was changed. Since changing the oil the gears are much stiffer to operate (previously no issues).

I invested in some top spec Millers CRX 75w 90 competition fully synthetic stuff which I though was the best I could buy, alas not!

Has anyone else sufferred from this? The mileage is only 41k and the car has no issues with the gearbox

Thanks
Graeme

Well you certainly chose the right viscosity according to Porsche information,so i am puzzled as to the cause?
I'll think about it

I've driven to work and back today (50miles round trip) and things seem to have improved a bit. The gear shift is worst between 1st and 2nd. I used to have a carrera 3.2 with a worn G50 box that needed a bit of patience when shifting. Since changing the oil this is similar to some extent. The 993 box was in comparison really slick prior to the oil change so I'm a bit puzzled also?

Do you think the race spec oil is something to do with it? I'm think of trying some lower spec mobil1 gearoil instead to see if things improve

Not a bad idea Graham??, It may be the case that the friction additives in the oil are too slippery for the synchros to work when the clearances are wide between the components of the synchromesh, when the box is cold , if that description fits the symptoms?
Christian.....................

yes, its definitely worse when cold. Think I will change it out for some non race stuff and see what happens...

There are several threads on here if you do a search on oil for our boxes. I read them all again in December when my car was going in for service and (in the cold) 1st to 2nd was really stiff. It only became stiff when I had the oil changed a year before (because of a very slight whine on 5th/6th that we though might be cured with an oil change - it was cured - but at the cost of stiff changes on cold). I don't know what oil went in a year ago - some generic oil my indie had in a large barrel!.

So in December I decided from the treads to put in "MILLERS OIL TRX 75w90 (Semi-synthetic)" but could not source any in time for the service so settled for "REDLINE Synthetic Gear Oil 75W-90 GL5" as a second choice. It's better but not as good as the original stuff that was in my box from the day I bought the car. So next December I'll probably spin the dice again!

Sounds familiar Mark! wished I'd left well alone like you probably also thought at the time. I'm going to change it out next week so we'll see what happens.

Incidentally, the Swepco 201 looks like the wrong viscosity? (Available in SAE 80W-90, 90, 140 and 250 only and not the 75W-90 as recommended by Porsche)

Cheers
Graeme

Have now changed out the oil for some non race spec stuff that my local independent recommended. This has completely transformed it. Now lovely and smooth, even when cold.

Here is what I installed:

Rock Oil SSD 75W90

Sorted!

Hi,
Maybe the race product was designed for optimum protection and lubrication at high temperatures and severe load. Not all racing products are designed to operate at light load and at normal road temperatures. Additive combinations are sometimes highly focused in their performance outcome rather than being of wider and more general in character appropriate to varied road use.
