993 heated seats?

Hi all,
Firstly happy new year!
I have full electric front seats excluding the heated function. Does any one know if the seats have the heating elements installed as standard including wiring or does a full heater system need to be installed?

Thanks in advance.

Mike,

I had heating added to my driver's seat. The wiring loom is in place (at least it is on my 993, and also on the 944 I had), you just need to add the heater pads. I bought mine from Southbound and had a local trimmer fit them.

I bought a new switch from Southbound along with the heating pads, and replaced the existing seat adjuster one. This gives me the two standard adjusters plus a switch for the heating pads between them (with two 'on' positions for different temperatures).

The pads work well (seat base and back), although with only two heating selections they're not as variable as the old 944 seats I had, and they don't heat up quite as quickly. Still great on a cold morning though!

Cheers John, I currently have 3 No 4 way seat switches and a blank plate for a heater switch so I wouldn't loose any seat operations, although my passenger side 4 way switch to lower and raise the seat back is working intermitantly so I need a new one of them also. Think I'll cost up the heater pads.

Cheers, Mike

Mike,

I think it's usually just a contact problem when the switches fail/go intermittent. I had a couple of bad ones on my old 944 that I took out and cleaned, and they worked fine afterward. Can be very fiddly to do, though, and the irritating thing about the switches in the 944 is that they are soldered in at the switch end, with the plug being at the far end of the lead where it goes into the loom, making removal and refit much harder that it should be (basically seat out). I can't remember if it's the same for the 993, but I would guess so as the units seem the same.

Cheers/John

I tried to remove the switch at the weekend; however I could not get it to come out more than 1/2 an inch, so I assumed I'd have to take the seat out and have a look at what was going on which I will do this weekend! Hopefully get away with some WD40 or a new switch!

Again thanks for your input John.

Mike,

Sounds like it's the same as the 944 - cable ties holding the switch cable onto the seat prevent you pulling the switch out. At least taking the seat out is easy! Good luck, and take care with the switch. You shouldn't have to open it up, but if you do I seem to remember there are some fiddly springs inside that can pop out.

Cheers/John

John,

Got my switch fixed today, seat came out no problem at all, however I found it easier to de-solder the switch rather than un plug and disconnect all the cables at multiple termination points. Stripped the switch and gave it a good clean, your right though re-assembly was a pain. Soldered the connections back up and worked perfectly! Just as well saying a replacement switch was a nearly £100!!!

Curious to Why there's a two pin socket spare under the seat, will post a photo when I get the chance - looking for ideas!

Cheers
Mike
