993 oil temp and leaks

I've noticed that my oil temp guage will rise to about the 9 O'clock position on the gauge when the car is in stationary traffic for a long time and drop back to about the 7 0'clock position when on the move, is this normal?

I've also noticed on hotter days(30 deg plus ) that there can be intermittant wiffs of smoke from around the left had wheel arch with the engine hot. There does not seem to be any oil leaks but the undertray shows slight damp patches although no drips, any clues what may be causing this as its really embarassing to have a smoking porsche!!

thanks

Hi,

The temp gauge sounds normal - I take it you mean the needle is approx horizontal at the 9 O'clock position?

Not sure about the oil smell - I've not been out in any hot enough weather yet [:)]

Cheers

bruce, sounds like the slow speed oil cooler resistor has finally given up the ghost and needs replacing

Bruce, mine runs at exactly the same temperatures.

Also had similar problem with whsips of smoke when hot and stationary, turned out to be a small leak from the rocker cover.

~Thanks for the replies guys

Good to know my temp gauge seems to be ok, I've checked the slow speed fan and works fine so I guess its just a characteristic of the car

It's two votes for cam cover gaskets on the oil leaks, I'll get them checked out!

cheers

Finally got to the bottom of the wisps of smoke today whilst in the main dealer for a check up........ and the majority vote won, it was a leaking cam cover gasket,

Oil Temps same as mine.........

Initially a small leak from rocker cover gasket caused whisp of smoke from left rear wheel arch.......this was fixed under warranty...rocker gasket leak....minor one....

Only for the same symptons to re-appear a couple of weeks later......went back to Independent (Portiacraft - Mill Hill) ... ready to let fly at them (90 mile round trip for me!!)

Get the car on the ramps and its the leak is from the gearbox...........

Gearbox now out and been sent away....................

Thank god for for all in warranties!!!!!!!!......

Hope yours is just a minor leak!!!

OK, I see your point about warranties! (see my recent post on other topic). But these from supplying dealers work because they do most of the fixing themselves. Once that expires I think you will find that it's just a gamble whether you or the insurance company wins and, like gambling, the odds are stacked in favour of the guy who owns the gambling house.

But I'm now getting worried writing this. My warranty runs out in 3 weeks!....[8|]

I was once told by my OPC dealer that there are 3 thermostates governing the oil system and apparently the third one only cuts in if you are caught in a traffic jam in the middle of the sahara desert. I guess I know what he trying to say.
