993 petrol issue

I don't wish to take the theme away from the General Discussion Area, but ...

Several years ago (before I bought my 993) I read that Shell Optimax wasn't necessarily great for 964's or 993's - I can't remember if this was due to the additives or not. The article basically said that standard fuel was just as good, if not better.

When I bought my car I noticed the handbook recommended 98 RON but I've never put the stuff in as that old article still sticks in the back of my mind.

Does Optimax improve performance of a 993 with no side effects ?

I certainly notice a performance improvement with Optimax. Pickup is smoother and it pulls harder.

Shane,

Maurice is absolutely right, forget RON95... i started using Optimax some 3 years ago, and the car does feel much better...

Maurice is always right! ;-) yeah noticable difference on the road - a friend's 996 3.6 can't pull away from me under full throttle now...... he could before! and the remap get's done this week, he's had it then!

I have to say that the TOTAL 98 octane fuel makes a real difference even compared to Optimax. It's like rocket fuel in my 993 turbo!

Just finishing the first tank of Optimax (have been a bit quiet for the last month), and I can't say that I've noticed a whole load of difference.

I presume it's taking a bit of time to dilute the last of the 95 (although I did stick in 62 litres of Optimax) and the sensors will take a bit of time to adjust ?

I don't have a Shell near me but I do have two Total stations so was pleased when I pulled into one of them (Brentwood, Essex) about 2 weeks ago to be told the Super was 98 RON.
This weekend however I pulled into the other Total (Stock, Essex) to see the pump was labelled 97 RON for super. Does anyone know what this is all about as I drove out of the Total without stopping to ask thinking if its 97 I'll go to my local BP for Ultimate.

If these station go down to 97 RON then getting 98 will become a drive in itself.
