993 potential purchase advice please

Following on from a previous post I have discussed a car with a dealer. The car appears to be very good low mileage with a good later history but unfortunatley its early history is not quite complete. Below is its history and as you can see from 99 to 2003 seems to of gone on mileage and elapsed on the time constraints. The other issue is that the car was destined to another country but was rediverted and sold via an opc from new. The car is not cheap and I would say it is very overpriced and I would expect a car for this money to have a perfect history. Could you offer some thoughts as I dont want to waste my time travelling 200 miles to see it if I am going to end up with acr that has the wrong kind of history. BTW the dealer was excellent and answered all questions honestly and is not trying to hide anything. Thanks.

How much real evidence is there around this "destined to another country" story? So I guess it's not a C16 car? Was it really sold new by an OPC? Or just made to look new by an early owner (and the original invoice has gone missing..). Perhaps it spent a summer on the rental curcuit in Cyprus before it was "rediverted".

Not doubting what the dealer is saying about what he knows, but where is the real evidence? Anyone buying this car from you in the future is going to ask these questions. If it's non-C16 the price needs to be under the current C16 market value - maybe 10%??? It may not have the UK alarm system.

How many owners? Can you speak to pervious one (or perhaps the first UK one?)

What are recent invoices like? Any recent work other than the above services?

I doubt that this car can justify a high price.

All the info I have is verbal at present. I think you have just confirmed what I already thought. I probably would not even entertain it had it been private. Im sure all the evidence is there but it just poses too many questions.

I think you've answered your own question. If the car is priced at a premium level, you would expect a perfect history. I would look elsewhere personally...(IMHO)[;)]

So I guess it's not a C16 car?

I can tell you that a well known independant porsche dealer well known to me and and I guess all of you had an ex Singapore car
(so it was RHD etc) but was not the UK code. This was a 993 with low mileage and history and he could not get it moved.
He had it for the best part of a year and asked me to make him an offer - sorry not interested -his face was not a pretty picture.[X(]
My advice would be to look else where - if this guy could not shift it and he has potential buyers passing through his showroom
everyday what chance have you went you want to move on?

If you intend to keep for a long time (which I accept Colin, who started this thread, may not be sure about given he is also looking at 996s) then I see nothing wrong in buying a non-C16 that's in good condition providing it's priced to take that into account. People looking for a good car that they are going to put serious miles on won't be too bothered where it was first sold - but only as long as they don't intend to sell it in a hurry.

Its more the gap in history. As said above for 42995 the car should have every single invoice, stamp and be near perfect. The car has also had 5 owners, coupled with the fact that its origin is somewhat sketchy and it is not clear that if it is a c16 car or not, I would expect it to be around 35-38k. These cars can fetch good money but for me it has to be correct.

Baxster - Some already wrote - They made more than one of these cars!

John, im well aware of how many they made. The point of the post was for me to establish what the norm is with these cars and what is acceptable, I know myself but wanted reassurance from a group of enthusiasts. My apologies.

My apologies.
Please don't apologies - I was not being rude - I just thought you had become transfixed on one car! I travelled up and down the country in search of a 993 2S.
It may help you to make up two lists as I did:-
List 1- On the must have list I had included model, colour, max mileage,RHD UK car, Service history.etc
List 2 -On the nice to have list include items such as heated seats (items that would be nice to have but would not exclude you
buying if all the must haves in List 1 were present)
If a car came up and it could not tick all the boxes for List 1 I would not bother to go any further.
Having viewed a car that ticked all List 1 and some of List 2 I took the following action because I would be worried about someone else buying it. Leave a full refund small deposit subject to having an independant inspection carried out.
I have purchased both my 993's from private sellers. I look at it like this - A trade 993 sale is only someone elses second hand car. The person who knows the answers to your questions is not the sales guy - its the previous owner!
I'm not saying don't buy trade - just my my way of thinking! [8|]

Good luck with search
