993 recall - 10 years on

Here's a little story for you. As per Maurice's advice (see
http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=29068
for details), I got in touch with Porsche to check my 1994 993 C2 had the engine wiring harness upgraded as per Porsche's W301 recall. They said the car hadn't been recalled. Although the chances of the wiring suddenly failing after nearly 10 years seemed slim, I decided I may as well get it seen to, if only to see how an OPC compares with an independent.

I contacted my nearest OPC (West London) and booked it in. Yesterday the work was done, I collected the car and everything seems fine - it was dark so I couldn't inspect the work very well. I'll post if anything seems untoward. I could have sworn they'd washed it (it was too dark to tell) and although using an OPC was a pleasant experience, it was no better or worse than I'd expect from an independent.

In the mean time I'd sent in my owner's card (from the service book). Porsche sent me a registered letter advising me that I was able to have the recall work done and offering to reimburse me if the work had been done but paid for. After the experience of some US owners I've read about
http://www.pcarracing.homestead.com/wiringharness4.html
I was reassured by the professional way in which the recall and the work was handled, despite the age of the car. I'm surprised none of my 993's previous six owners had bothered with it - they ran the risk of an engine bay fire!

Obviously I'll post again if there are any problems when I can inspect it but despite the hassle of taking the car into an OPC, I think if you have an early 993 then it's well worth checking it out. It only cost me a couple of pounds' worth of petrol and an hour of travelling.

If I recall, this wiring harness fault was only announced fairly recently?

So no suprise the previous owners had not had it done.

I'm not sure as I'm relatively new. I assumed it was discovered within a few years but you may well be right - there were updates to that US site I linked to during 2002.

Does this wiring loom recall affect all 993's or only certain years production?
I've owned my 96 car for over 5 years and although regularly OPCed - (thats over £14 grand spent on maintainence[] in that time) have heard squat from them!

its mainly '95 cars though some may creep into '96................i ve had an rs and rsr done but the GT2 is oct '96 and escaped ................u could say its 'half ' a loom really, takes abt 4 hrs ...............to check its almost as simple as sqeezing a 'handful' of loom and if it cracks its rotten, involves original material being dodgy ,of course heat matters but if twin turbos havent cooked it nothing will......................this really can cause fires in the extreme or damage to starter motor and ring gear/fly wheel etc so its not much fun ............OPC should have chassis numbers affected .

Mike if you phone local OPC with vin number. it takes 2 minutes to put your at rest

regards dave

Phoned POC and guess what? They want to check it, which they say will take 15 minutes. I'll keep you posted on the result

Cheers Mike.

When I had the loom replaced in my car I was told by the OPC (St Albans) that there are three different upgrades that take different amount of times - 3hrs, 4hrs and 7hrs. Mine had the big one !

ps Mike, £14k in 5 years .... have you had some big problems or do you just do a lot of mileage ?!?

Mostly all routinestuff and all OPC service, to keep warranties intact and to get that stamp to maintain value??
Extra jobs the usual 993 gremlins.
Biggest ticket item so far was crankshaft oil seal -engine out job.[]
