993 replacement front discs

Have just purchased the best ever 993C4S, totally pristine took almost 18 months of long hard searching! as the saying goes, the best things in life are worth waiting for.....

The car has spent most of its life stored in garages, and has been driven on a weekly basis to keep car mechanics in good running order however, the brake discs have suffered with corrosion developing around the drill holes and I have been advised to replace them. Is there anywhere I can get Original Porsche Discs other than from OPC's, from what I can see a lot of companies confess to offering original parts although they do not always relate to that particulair item! Any Help would be much appreciated, I am in no rush as I do not intend to change until spring 05..

Jon,

Also due to lack of use, my front and rear disks had corroded quite badly on the inside faces.

I took the car into Ninemeister and they noticed that the corrosion was so bad, even large clumps of the disks had given way - I had recently noticed a slight judder through the pedal! Needless to say I had all four disks changed with pads (OE) and now they are back to their best and do the stopping-job superbly.

Ninemeister did a great job at a fair price and I would strongly recommend them.

My 4 discs need to be replaced too. Although I think I will try and get by till next spring and have the 12 month service at the same time. I'll also avoid all the salt and wet winter stuff on the new equipment.

I will use JZ as have been happy with all their work so far and easy for me to get the car there and back while using the train service to and from London for work.

Now that is a bold claim ...

I got my replacement disks from my trusted independent who maintains my car. Porsche never manufactured disks themselves. In fact a lot of parts on a Porsche are outsourced for production, sometimes changing manufacturer over the life of the model. You usually have 3 choices for replacement

1/ Original part comes in box with Porsche all over it.
2/ Exactly same part direct from the original manufacturer with the manufacturer's name all over it.
3/ Generic copy.

The cost decreases from 3 down to 1. My independent always gives me the option of choosing with advise on the alternatives.

Ian_uk....

Come on!!!

Name names and suppliers!!!

Anyone got any info as to when Eurocarparts have a choice of Genuine discs or Zimmerframes they are possibly one and the same?? I have heard this is definately not the case.... may be the same manufacturer but the units they make for porsche are better quality and higher tolerance??

Have you thought of having them skimmed? -GT1, Chertsey 01932 569911, can skim them on the car.

Keep to OE discs.

Remember, assuming u r a PCGB member, most OPC's will give you 10% discount.

Keep to OE discs.

Mel,

As I will be buying new discs this week I would like your valuable advice (grovel, grovel)(payment 1No. beer at the next CCC nite).

Discs - fine but wot about pads...

I am looking at Pagids fast road jobbies from Design911 or do I stick with the genuine article???

Or would I be better off with another brand???

Thanks for the varied advise, especially Maurice re: the drillings etc! I am going to investigate the possibility of skimming first as this could save me a few pennies!!! also there is minor wear approx 1.0mm so good chance of recovery.... Although will need to replace pads.

P.S I am a PCGB member even though it does'nt actually say that when I login, any reasons why this is?

Thanks once again, keep up the good work..

The way you drive Tim?

A large anchor and rope would be more appropriate[:D][:D][:D]

Hi Jon
If you ever decide to wash the car and use plenty of water washing the brake dust out of the wheels ---- Don't! -- Unless you then drive the car around for a couple of miles drying out the brakes. If you do wash the brakes out and then decide not to drive the car for a few days, the brakes stick and the longer you leave the car the harder they it stick.
Water and cold brakes is a bad mixture.
Enjoy your car

Thought that wud be common sense Mo ,or put another away u ll only leave them wet once !
Tim, use Porsche original pads unless ur dramatically upping ur number of track days ..............i ve just changed the pads on the Clubsport ,the originals that came with the car were of unknown origin, stuck in some Pagid yellows ,car used almost only for track days .What were the ones we did nt know abt till they came out after abt 6 track days and unknown road miles ? Porsche standard pads !!![There are some brake mods but they wud nt affect the wera just the overall feel ]

Right!!

Standard discs and pads, a large anchor and some Blakeys on the heels of my right foot should just about do it.

Anyone remember those innocent days, putting blakeys on your shoes then finding a nice hill to pedal down dragging your heels and sending up a nice shower of sparks??? Those were the days... and I was only 43.
