993 Rev Counter Question

I have only just bought my first 911 993 so I might be asking a numpty question!
My rev counter trip computer display is incredibly dull to the point I cannot see it at night and the right hand half of the rev counter seems poorly lit .
Are these items a quick fix ?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated
Thanks Adrian

The OBC (on board computer) is a common failure and you may be lucky and find it's just a bulb gone behind the LCD. However most of the time the LCD itself is at fault and will need repairing or replacing.

Give it a firm tap with your palm on the glass. You might be lucky and bring it back to life.

Hi dommartin, I have a problem with my OBC in that it flickers and sometimes lights up and sometimes is totally dark, can you recommend anyone to repair it?

Cheers

John

There's a fair amount of info on this problem on Rennlist the US Porsche forum.

If you're not confident with a soldering iron yourself I would have a specialist instrument refurbisher take a look.

REAP Autodesign are one company you could try. Alternately I've read that Speedy Cables are another.

Mine has a similar problem but only when the lights are on. When the lights are off it's perfect but when the lights are on it flickers brighter or dimmer but never completely dark. I've found that if I completely dim the lighting to the instrument cluster it flickers less but still not quite right. If I have the instrument cluster at full brightness the OBC display is perfect but I really don't like the gauges that bright.

I suspect it may be a problem with the dimmer control but haven't got round to taking it out to check.

Hi dommorton, good tip, I normally look on rennlist, don't know why I didn't this time. For everyone else, the links are here:

replacing the resistor: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/993-forum/352737-obc-rev-counter-display-repair.html

Work around fix: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/993-turbo-forum/168066-obc-light-fix-modification.html?referrerid=35947

I will give it a go, pretty handy with a soldering iron, but mine's not temp adjustable so will need to be careful not to fry the resistor.

Thanks again

John
