993 RS and 964RS roll cage difference

Talking to Paul W at Bromley Pageant we were discussing the way the cages differed on both cars. The 964's cage goes through to the engine bay. The 993 cage does'nt.
It just occured to me that the 993 RS engine bay is very different with different suspension pick up points which might have got in the way of the cage. Just a thought.

Laurence, I would cross post this in 993 Rs forum,,,,if allowed....we need Mr Howells or someone else with such experience to give us a clue!

Hi,
Maybe the reason that the 993 Cup and N/GT cars did not get the roll cage through to the engine bay is that the 993 shell was much stiffer and did not need the extra strengthening.
Discuss?!

What additional strengthening did the 993 shell get?

I thought the 964 RS shell was seam welded?

Pete

Laurence having had a quick look, the 993 rear suspension dampers sit slightly to the side of where the cage mounting brackets are on your 964 & Melvs cup car...it would make access awkard for the suspension.

I haven't seen the cars in question but I suspect it is because the later car has a very different suspension arrangement. Isn't there almost a "sub-chassis" and if so, does the roll cage actually attach to that? I would imagine that the only reason that a roll cage would go to any point in a car is to provide useful stiffness or protection. In this case, I would suspect we are talking stiffness to help the suspension stay rigid. Therefore, different attachment points and suspension types would have different requirements.
