993 Shock absorbers...

I have read that the standard 993 shocks deteriorate with time, regardless of mileage- is this true?

How can I tell if my shocks are on the way out?

If I did upgrade the shocks to Bilstein HDs, will this crucify the ride?- my car is a '96 Targa which I understand is a little softer...

I have been recommended Bilstein HDs and H&R springs. Would this be a jump too far?

So many questions, any advice gratefully recieved...

Thanks

If you get the maroon sport H&R springs they will take the car down to M030/M033 ride height, which is a good ride height.

Also, if you get hour dampers from Carnewal, the standard HD's on these springs will allow the car to run at M030 ride height, if you go for the extra threaded version you can get down to RS height but you are then faced with doing extra work on the suspension to allow for the different loading.

The ride is improved with the HD's and H&R springs as it is far to soft and wallowy on original OEM cheapo dampers.[:D]

I got the above springs and shocks fitted middle of last year and am thrilled with the all round performance gain, and in some instances they seem to be more comfortable( especially on the motorway),i would recomend them as an alternative replacement with the bonus of a massive upgrade in the handling ability of the car.
I also had rs anti roll bars fitted and camber tweeks along with alignment,as a do a few trips a year to the ring.
You can buy all the gear from carnewal as said above(very cheap comparibly) and JZ Machtech fitted it all very competently.[:D]

Robert,

My Targa will shortly be going through such an upgrade and I'm currently collecting the parts from various sources !

I will be installing Bilstein HD shocks and M033 springs. On taking advice from various people, including Gert Carnewal, it has been suggested that a 'lower' M030 type setup is not really suitable for the Targa, but a Bilstein / M033 setup is ideal.

Apparently, our Targa's are not too fond of extreme lowering [:'(] !

When the job is done I willl report back.

Hi Maurice,

As ever, I succumb to your superior knowledge of the subject.......[8|]

Stiffness, rather than height is indeed the reasoning behind M033 instead of M030. Us soft Targa boys don't like it too hard [:D]
