993 Sports Cam's

As you may have noticed from my other recent posts, my right cam sheered and will be replaced. I'm thinking that I might replace both (as I'm a bit nervous that the other might be 'flawed' as well!) - if so maybe with sports cams - anybody had any experience of this upgrade on a 993 varioram? As the car is my daily drive I would still want drivability in traffic and also to maintain the hydraulic lifters. I guess I'd need a live remap to get the full benefit but would want it to run OK for a short while until I got that done.

I have 9m fast road cams on my 993 in conjunction with their fancy billet head and live remap, personally unless you switch to RS head or 964 head with smaller ports (faster velocity) then I wouldn't bother just going for sports cams on their own. Plus high lift cams are best with solid lifters (as per 964) which increases maintenance cost significantly!

If you are chasing a good 2nd set of cams ask 9m as he replaces a good few when he does his head conversions (which all come with 9m sports cams) so will almost certainly have a good 2nd set kicking around taken from a car they have upgraded.

It seems that Porsche are aware of other camshaft failures but I'm still trying to get details of exactly what type of failures they've seen. So it may be that I really ought to change both camshafts - don't want to conclude this top end rebuild only to find a short while after that the other camshaft fails! This also points towards replacing with new camshafts not used (which may fail in the same way as mine). The cost of one Porsche camsaft is about the same price as a pair of after market cams (9m) - so on economic grounds it may make more sense to do that even if there is no adverse affect.

With these types of changes - cams, heads etc was there any adverse affect on emissions - ie difficulty getting through the MOT?

Hi Anton,

no problems with MoT emissions are spot on, you should get the car remapped if you go with cams etc, I recommend wayne schofield (chipwizards) up north, loads have used him and he is the best and when he does a live remap, he will have a probe in the exhaust measuring mixture etc so you will know it is spot on

Thanks again.

Looks like I'll go with RS cams and then get a remap - ideally with Wayne.

and the only "problem" I solved with all the work on my engine was a performance itch which soon reappeared about 6 - 12 months later, the performance drug also has severe wallet lightening side effects so be warned, but I have slowly recovered ;)

Yes my wallet is already so light it's attached to me with a piece of string to stop it floating away!
