993 Starter motor

I have a 1997 C4 Cab with a starter problem.

Sometimes after turning the ignition key the starter motor will turn immediately. Other times all I hear is the solenoid clicking. So far it has always started but can take up to 10 attempts.

I assume the solenoid is just making a bad contact. Can the solenoid be changed/repared or does it require a complete new starter motor. One day it will fail completely and I am sure it will be a Sunday night and raining.

I had similar symptoms with my car a few years ago.
I would check the battery condition/charge, as a replacement battery cured it for me[;)].

Ditto

Me to, battery solved the problem.

If it turns out not to be a battery problem then yes a replacement solenoid should be available. Try to get a genuine bosch one rather than a rebuilt or copy item .It's an easy job once the motor is off the car but just check prices first as it's becoming uneconomic to buy the spares as they increase the price and make it too close to an exchange bosch motor complete.Check earth straps and main battery cables are clean and tight at all points!

Flat spot on the flywheel you say! It's possible but I've never seen it on any flat six engine, so i'd say very unlikely. Never seen a pinion gear worn either come to think of it on a Porsche. Have you checked the earth straps and main battery cable? The one way clutch in the pinion gear on the starter motor can fail but you hear the starter motor spin but the engine does not turn.
When the battery power is low you get a machine gun type rhythmic clicking noise from the starter motor as the solenoid moves in and out. The battery voltage goes up and down due to the power being insufficient to turn the engine thus bringing the battery voltage even lower causing the solenoid to return to rest as momentarily there is not even enough power to keep it engaged.

I bought a new battery and it now starts first time 90% of the time. The other 10% of the time it starts on the second turn of the key.

If anyone is buying a new Bosch battery from Europarts doing click and collect knocks about £20 off the price of the battery.

Thanks for everyone's help

Hi Nick

I had exactly the same thoughts as you. The original battery when not clicking span the engine quite happily.I then used a low capacity Halfords battery that I had which although struggled a bit to turn over the engine still started it without clicking.

Hi Nick

I had exactly the same symptoms. When it wasn't clicking seemed to spin the engine quite happily so as you assumed battery was ok. I put on a spare small capacity Halford battery, which although struggled to turn over engine still started it without clicking.
