993 targa & poss sold, what next ?

Hi all, currently have a 993 targa till possible tomorrow, kinda stuck with what to replace it with. Love the car, its perfect but fancy bit of a change as had nearly 2years.

Was originally thinking a manual 993 c2s but friends have said will be no real different so why bother & some are trying to talk me into 996's as different and more modern. Have had an early 2.5 boxster afew years ago which was great but now trying to deciede the next best thing which doesnt depreciate madly.

Toying with the idea of searching for a nice 993turbo durring the next few months with 40k max to spend! hopefully one with low mileage 40,000ish. Do you all think this is a good idea & more importantly do you think i will find one with this kinda money. What are all your opinions. Any other models to consider, crossed my mind getting a 964RS but my gut feeling is its an old car for alot of money.

Cheers in advance

Hi Stuart

Don't think you're gonna get a 993TT with less than 40k miles for £40k - certainly not right hand drive.

But you should be able to get a high mileage tt for around 40k?

964rs - daily driver?

how about a good varioram C2 and spend what's left on suspension, brakes and 9M billet heads.
or do that to a wide body 993 if you want the looks too...

or have you thought about a low mileage 964 turbo 3.6? - there's still some out there though like the 993tt it could be expensive to run.

I think if it was me and it was going to be a keeper I'd go for the higher mileage 993TT or possibly try to up my budget a little to get the mileage down and the condition better...

Good luck!

Agree with kennyboy. A 993turbo seems the logical next step. Would have thought you could find a decent hi-miler for £40k. If it will be a keeper, mileage will be immaterial provided it has been looked-after. I would personally look closely at a 90 thou on that basis.Nicely run-in.

I agree. There was a RHD 993 turbo midnight blue full leather 103,000 miles for sale at Eynsham on the Saturday for £35,000 from 911 virgin. Looked OK with recent service, clutch and new turbos. Attracted a lot of attention as "the cheapest RHD 993 TT on sale in the UK". It sold within a couple of hours as I recall.

Yeah I saw that one £35k for a car with over 100k miles seems alot of money, to be fair though the condition - paint looked lovely on it but just imagine trying to sell that on a year or so later with the mileage even higher. Surely that would put alot of people off? Could have had so many owners as well. know the price is right but seems your getting an old car thats been round the world!!

Think I would rather save abit more money and buy a nice car with sensible mileage with good history I knew I would be able to sell on at a future date! With that kinda price in reason 45k you could more than likely pick up a 996 4s / possible getting to the bottom end of a 996 turbo. Market prices are getting rather funny like that arnt they. old car - new car ???? No RMS probs i believe on 996 turbo's. We're have to see what happens. A debatable point I believe...

p.s. how reliable are the twin turbo's in 993's ??

but tell that to the last owner that sold that to Henry Towers, now that really would have been the cheapest 993 Turbo !!

Stuart, forget depreciation rather how much you would need to spend on the car in the next 12 months, that's the real cost !!

another Targa owner bites the dust, they're dropping like flies !!!

Your logic is sound though you will only get a 60k car for that money you will need to go 10% more for under 50k. The C2S and C4S will not offer much more than your Targa except the wide body and higher spec interior and brakes, the Turbo will give you +40% on the power front. Alternatively you could get a low mileage LHD one in the UK if you could find one for under £40k.

Personally I was looking for a Targa as a stepping stone to a Turbo and sneaked into a LHD Turbo which was £12/15k cheaper than RHD, personally I am over the moon.
The Turbo prices are rising slowly so depreciation should be minimal for c5k pa which is no different from Targa, C2S or C4S. Maintenance should not be any more than C4S unless something major goes in the engine. 993 Turbos are very reliable unless completely abused.
Ive spent £1500 in year one and over £1.4k was replacing all disks, pads and rear dampers that I new I had to do when I bought the car and they lasted 10 months before I got round to it.
Running costs Annual Service under £400 which is all my true costs for year one except.....
I spent £120 on Fabspeed exhaust for the sound..... well noise... and £1k on RUF 5 spoke wheels and this is the biggest problem with Turbos which is they are just so upgradeable.....

For your £40k a LHD 996 GT3 is also in your range(see Northways) as well and maybe a higher mileage 996 Turbo and of course a Perfect low mileage 964RS

Good luck try the cars out and get them inspected

Well after all this the chap didnt want my targa. It was the midnight blue, marble leather one that was on the street concours at Eynsham Hall. 53,000miles. Full OPC history (all bills, mot's fom new), 4 new p-zeros & wheel allignment etc. The chap reconed it was too old. 96P - hmm, perhaps I have something wrong here!!! Never mind. So if anybody fancies one thats won a regional concours and had a 2nd, 3rd places at other events let me know and can pass on some more info.

Too be fair not to bothered it didnt go as at the time it was just a pass in the dark to see the interest. In the mean time I was looking forward to having alook round other cars, never mind....Time to save a bit more dough for when the times right.
