993 Targa Roof - What to look for

The roof components are difficult to examine because they are fairly well hidden from view.
When I bought mine I checked that it opened and closed smoothly and that the rubber seal along the front edge was intact. With the roof open you could look in the plastic channels on either side for signs of moisture, or staining where moisture has dried, to get an idea of how much water, if any, gets through. These channels are designed to catch any water that gets through the roof and drain out on either side of the rear window - a simple but clever way of protecting the interior from water ingress. You may also wish to drive with the roof open/part open to see if there are any rattling noises - I had a niggling rattle at one point and had to tighten up one of the metal sliders (an allen screw). Also bear in mind that the doors are frameless so check the seal between the windows and the door pillars and roof. I am afraid my knowledge if fairly limited but I hope that helps.

Oh yes, and get a professional inspection before you part with your cash.

That's the best bit of advice! ... I hear the targa roof can be a touch pricey to fix, but a elegant solution, if that's what you fancy.
Also check the inside of the car very thoroughly for evidence of recent leaks, i.e. under the carpets etc.
There is a bit of wind noise and the odd rattle and creak from the roof- FWIW, I test drove one some years ago (when the car was probably 3 yrs old tops) and it was just the same then...
