993 Tiptronic

Hi this is my first post so I'd better start by introducing myself. I am not a member, having retired to the South of France partly for the weather and partly to escape the current British government, I will in the Spring become a member of the local Porsche club. 911Med.
Current car 993 C2S Coupe 1997 vintage. Tiptronic box. The reason for posting.
Previous Porsche's all 928s. 1980, 1984 S2 and lastly 1989 S4. The current car a dream, after a gap of many years, now realised. I might take it to my grave with me.
Current problem, if anybody could throw any light on it before I visit the local specialist, consists of a problem with the tipronic operation. It currently seems to change gear twice for each change! You pull it down in tip mode and it seems to change gear twice before settling into the next ratio. It also does this in auto mode. This is not noticable when the car, ie, oil is cold. It seems to function, if one can say that in these circumstances, otherwise perfectly. It just feels as though the box has eight ratios rather than four.
Anybody any idea's please.

Hi John. You lucky so and so, I wish I could escape the British Government!

I'm actually experiencing the same problem, if it is a problem. I have a 1997 993 C2S Tiptronic and it happens all the time in 2nd gear. It feels as if the car changes into 3rd and then it then seems to engage again before going into third. I just put it down to slip, but then the car's mileage is only 7000 and I would have thought it would have lasted longer than that. I've booked mine in for a 24,000 with Porsche in Jan, I was going to mention it to them then. Let me know if you find out what it is.

Regards

Mine has and always does the same between 2nd and 3rd. Its not a problem, there are some rennlist posts on why it does it (cant immediately recall why) but its working as designed.
Chris

Thanks Scott. Funny how you never hear of these things before buying! Anyway, sorry but interested to hear others are experiencing the same problem.
ZRCG1 Says he also has it but not a problem according to a Rennlist post. ZRCG1 can you possibly find the post again. I am not a Rennlist member but will join if necessary to read it. Or perhaps you could give us the jist of it. Cheeky!
Scott why a 24k service at 7k?
My own continuing thought's are torque converter slip, or what used to be called 'flare', and when it finally locks up it feels like you are changing gear again.
Flare used to be a sign of a failing torque converter.
I propose the local specialist beginning January but cannot make it before
I had to wait until 2000 to retire down here at 59 years. It's good but we both, do miss a good indian meal and fish and chips.
Look forward to hearing further and thanks for all the reponse so far.

Sounds like mine's OK then, but John, in every gear! Would also be interested in the article Chris. Even though it's 9 years old with only 7k, it's only ever had two services. A first service and a 12,000 service at 3500 miles. I was concerned that a few things may need attention and replacing like brake fluid etc. What would you suggest it needs?

Also, John C, I've only had it a month and I intend to, not in the rain though!

Scott

Another thought that has just come to mind, is that if I give the car some welly and make the box work as it's really intended, it becomes not quite so smooth and you do not suffer the two stage change. Or not so as you can feel it.
Look forward to hearing further comments from anyone.

John/Scott,

Just had a quick look on RL, here is the text of what was pointed out in one thread (there are many)....
"Torque convertor lockup is not a problem, but a feature - this is essentially a clutch that engages to reduce the slippage/inefficiency of a torque convertor after a certain speed is attained. What you are experiencing is that at around 30-40mph in 2nd gear, it feels like a gear just engaged. As many here have pointed out - this is perfectly normal."

There are many posts about it, you dont need to be a member to browse the forums (although most people are - its a superb site).
Go to www.rennlist.com -> enter site->web forums->browse forums-> air/oil cooled-> 993 and click "search this forum". I searched on "tiptronic gear" and it came back with 2 pages worth.

Chris

Happy New Year to everyone.
Thanks Chris have looked on Rennlist now but if anyone else has any comments pleased to read them.
john.

Hi Gordon,
A sharp stab to the floor will usually get an instant response. Initially I found the shift unwilling because I was a touch too gentle with my right foot. Good technique generally, but not if you want to be fired down the road like a rocket.
