993 tt diagnostic

Afternoon all. I have a 993 tt which has recently been in for an oil service. Prior to putting the car in for the service the "engine check" orange light had come on so I had gone in and had a diagnostic check run on it. The fault code flagged up a problem with the idle control valve and was not that serious so it was reset but the light came on again after about 50 miles. I used the car quite a bit before it was serviced and when the diagnostic was run the same idle control valve problem flagged up, as did a non-recognition of ECU code and a misfire of cylinder 3 code (I had never noticed any drop in power). The engine check light has come on again and I'll get a diagnostic done this weekend.

I would be interested to know of others experiences with this warning light, are they fairly reliable? Anybody had any issues with running the 430 bhp ecu and fault codes?

Cheers

Cheers guys, I have been reviewing the rennlist forums and have the car booked in for a check on Saturday. Is there any way of reseting the CEL light without using a laptop diagnostic tool? Do you know where I could get a device for reading the codes reseting the light?

Thanks
G

Dont worry to much as if there was something wrong you would have noticed something, sounds like a bit of the electrical gremlins coming out to play.

Thanks for your replies, having read a few of the rennlist threads it seems a lot of people experience problems with the CEL light and getting rid of it solving problems with the fault codes. The highly sophisticated solutions appear to be placing a square of black tape over the light or removing the bulb. I will get this checked out at the weekend but I hadn't noticed any loss in power or anything. I guess that the important light to look out for is the large red exclamation mark and the oil pressure tank temperature guages.

Understood. I picked up on the emissions (smog tests) discussions. Will be getting it checked out this weekend and will get remedied - don't want any problems pre Ring and Le Mans![:D]

The 993tt emissions systems are virtually the same world-wide. Both US and Rest of World (ROW) 993tt's are OBD-II compliant. Normally aspirated (NA) 993's are quite differnt US and ROW.

You should be able to read the ECU fault codes with any ISO compliant OBD-II software and the corresponding lead.

I have a factory 430 ECU and have no issue with spurious CEL's.

Hi Maurice,

I can confirm the presence of the secondary air injection ports on the heads of my 993tt from (too close and recent!) personal inspection. Your statement's valid for the normally aspirated 993's but the 993tt is much the same world-wide. Quoting from Porsche's own "Service Information Technik" documentation "Emissions monitoring (OBD II) supplied as standard worldwide" and "electronically controlled secondary air injection system".

Just popping up to say that I have the 430 upgrade and have no problems whatsoever.

What Motronic DME versions do the US & RoW 993TTs use? US DME5.2.2 used on early 996s will trigger the CEL on many P-code faults that will not set off the CEL on a RoW car. I have a feeling that the 993 uses DME5.2, so it may be a similar situation. (Not that it helps the original post at all)

Hi Maurice, yes, it's ROW. Have a look at page 61 (section 1 subgroup 8) in PET for the ROW 993; the 993tt has an air injection system. Cheers, Felix
