993 tyre wear & choice of new?

Just got my 993 - finally. Took best part of 12months but I am very happy with the final outcome. Couple of smaller matters to sort out on my new love to get her to perfection and I will be tapping forum for views to assist this in coming weeks. Most pressing item - "" tyres.

Car has following wear stats "" from PPI:

Front - RH 6-6-3 (i) LH 5-5-4 (i)
Rear - RH 3-4-3 (i) LH 3-4-2 (i)

Question 1: Would above be considered a typical tyre wear profile for a 993 i.e. seems outer edges going much quicker on all corners that rest. Should I be concerned here and consider some form of alignment check - or is this normal? Current tyres are Bridgestone Potenza S02 285/30 (rear) & 225/40 ZR18 N3 (front).

I am told I should not let tyres go below 3mm so does this mean I am effectively looking at/or should consider replacing all 4 now or just 2 rears for now. I will likely do only 3-4k miles pa and stick to good /dry weather with no tracking.

Question 2): Given my driving profile what would be consensus on "˜best' tyres. Appreciate this is the emotive question but would be interested in views ahead of any uninformed commitment on my part. Reading various forum threads and more so on the many cars I have viewed and owners spoken to it would seem that many/most favour the Pirelli P-ZERO ROSSO N4's as best. My car currently has the Bridgestone's above at believe these are considered good all rounders with above average wear qualities. Michelin Pilot Sport's seem less popular as do Continental SportContact but have follwoings. These seem to be the principle choice group.

I do appreciate that car should/must have same brand/type on all corners.

Any feedback on above welcome.
 
Tyres do seem to be a bit emotive, you're correct!!

I currently have Continentals on my 993 and I do a bit of track work as well as all weather road driving. I have to say that I don't find Continental too bad grip wise, be it on road or track, in the wet or in the dry. They are, however, brilliant in terms of wear rate, which could well be one of your primary considerations.

With respect to the wear issue with your current tyres, I'd think a decent alignment session might be in order, given the feathering over the width you seem to be experiencing. I have track biased settings on my car and don't experience this type of wear, so I certainly wouldn't expect to see it on a pure road car.

I am north Kent based. Any strong recommendations re shop to do an alignment check. Believe this is a long and involved process so I assume we are talking 3-4 hours labour?

Michelins are fine, actually they are very good
but as more factory cars seem to come without with Pirelli's they seem to be the choice.............
 
Hi Sundeep - are you running Bridgestones on your car? I thought I read in a previous thread that was what you were going for?

Michelin Pilot Sport N2's for the last year or so, after a switch from Conti's

all well and good, grips levels are good and so has been the wear rate, considering those track days I've done....
 
My mistake

I was looking for an opinion on Bridgestones, but cannot find anyone who has them. I think they have the lowest wear index / highest grip (IIRC)

Grip is always subjective but they are softer, so in theory they could be grippier at the limit but I'm sure Michelin and Pirelli would disagree.... [:D]

Looks like the rear tyres have been underinflated for some time. Uneven wear on the fronts suggest a) alignment is out and b) motorway mileage has prevented even wear given the amount of camber.

I don't rate Rossos at all. Imho, I find the N3 System Assimetricos are a superior tyre in terms of sidewall stiffness to improve turn-in (and helps reduce the potential for rim damage) and the grippier compound.

Rossos are constructed on a very flexible carcass and the high number of small tread blocks means the tyre squirms a lot once the tyre has heated up. Rossos are designed to be the most comfort-oriented tyre in the Pzero range.

Sadly the N3 Assimetricos are going out of production, so grab them while you can.

Edited to add: I was talking to the guys at Protyre who provide tyre support for the Porsche Open series, and they concured with my sentiments on the N4 Rossos vs N3 Assimetricos. They said they had similar experiences between the two tyres on Porsche (N-rated) and also Subaru (non-N-rated) applications.
 
Thanks to everyone for the input to my question [:)] Presumably the same comments would apply in 17" sizes regarding the tyre differences - are the SO2a's available in 17"?
