993 tyres

[FONT=Arial"]I'm about to put a new set of tyres on my beloved 993 for the first time. I have a mixture on at present, P zero Rosso's on the front and Continental Sport Contact2's on the rear. There's still a fair bit of tread on the fronts but the rear's are nearly slick. I'm wondering if there's any benefit in replacing all round to match.

Any thoughts chaps?

BTW. Silverstone was fab. last weekend[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
 
Let me be the first to say that you shouldn't mix tyres on these cars so it looks like a set of P Zeros for the rear at this point. If they wear like mine did, you will get two pairs of rears to one pair of fronts.

I agree with this. I also wouldn't mix makes on the car.
Pirelli or Michelin is down to personal choice and money. Cheapest tyres I have found is Costco however they only do Michelins. Normally they also have an offer on twice a year with 20% off making them an even better deal. Have just 5000 miles out of my rear Pirelli's! [:mad:]
 
In my opinion its a no brainer.... PZero's are the way to go - have tried most others over the years SO2's, Michelins & Contis and while the wear rate is slightly higher, the Rossos certinaly give me the most conifident drive & feel which is what it's all about! [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]



 
Maurice, when you say that PS2's are not available N rated in standard sizes, do you mean 16's & 17's as I've just had PS2 N1's fitted all round on my 18's?

stick some Toyo888 or mich cups on.....much more fun...I do have a set of Pzero Rosso and they are dreadful by comparison [;)]
 
PZeros in my opinion.
Watch the prices I had a puncture a few weeks ago and as it was on a Sunday I was struggling..
I went to our nearest Kwik Fit.
They quoted me £242 for a rear PZERO.(RIP OFF MERCHANTS)
I managed to get them down to £168 after a bit of waffling.
Be careful prices seem to vary.
 
I know the tyre debate rages on, but the difference between asymmetricos (I know different to Rosso's) and PS2's is simply staggering. Road noise and wet/dry grip is worlds apart in favour of the PS2's. IMHO of course.
 
Thank chaps, all your comments greatly appreciated. I've gone for the Rosso's on the rear to match the fronts and managed to get the pair for £300. Not too bad it seems.
 
hi i had 2 s02`s on back in nov 06 to match s02`s on the front they seem to me ok but its 1st set since owning the car so cannot compare to others i`m on 17`s turbo wheels on my c2.
 
I have been running these semi track tyres all through the wet weather..suprisingly good...

I have goodyear F1 on a non Porsche,....really good tyre, not N rated though
the GSD3 version has just been replaced, but still some available..may be intersting though if you need to replace only 2 of the 4 sometime in the future.
 
I had run Continentals on my C4 - 18" before needing to change after 14k miles - semi defensive driving, did 3k on German autobahns "" occasional hard accelerating and hard braking; both activities I understand can affect tyre wear. On examination prior to the change it was noted I had equal wear on all four wheels. Must have something to do with "˜little miss daisy' being able to overtake me on roundabouts. ;-)
Anyhow, have changed to P zero Rosso's on all four, we'll have to see how these wear and behave with time.
 
Dont do it a mate tried them on his 964 and the car was dangerous,it was like he was on jelly,as soon as he put porsche rated tyres back on it handled a dream.Ive got them on a Astra GSI and they are better in the wet than the dry but still roll about on the rims when pushing the car hard...will never use them again. I've gone with Bridgestone S04 on 17" which the car had when I got it. Got 15k of hard driving with 4mm still left on the rear, pretty good in the wet too. Just had new all round for £470 ish.
 
Personally, I would recommend sticking to the 265 on a Carrera 2 - no need for any bigger and they still look fine and do the job - although I know others have fitted 285 successfully but had to roll the rear arches slightly, I believe [:)]

First question is what year car you intend to use them on .. there are restrictions / advice. Refer to the Classic Tyre test for permitted sizes by model ..
As noted, general balance F<>R is probaly best suited with the 225/40 265/35 combination : going to 285/30 rear would create less oversteer / more understeer. If your perception is of not neutral handling, take your pick.
I'm pretty sure 285s fit within the arches OK, without issues, and there's no issue with 285s going on those rims either.

Hi and thank you for your replies and observations. It is a 95 993 and the wheels are hollow spokes.
I will stick with 265s as don’t wish to confuse or compromise anything.

just looking at cost of tyres and will most likely go for Michelin PS or something similar.
