993 values dipping?

Hi all,

I thought I'd share my current 993 selling experience with fellow owners and see what advice I can get.

I currently have a 993 for sale which is in the members cars for sale area of the site and must admit have felt very disappointed at the lack of response and apparent dip in values.

I always thought that a good early 993 with full history would not go for less than £24k-£25k, but I've had a potential buyer let me know that he has found a 993 with 62 miles for £22k!...I always thought that was left hand drive money!! Mine has 82k miles, so does that leave me asking for £21k?...madness! I actually don't think that 82k is very high, as it only works out to 7,000 per year during it's lifetime and I've only driven it 6,000 miles in nearly 3 years.

I have spent money on Rook suspension and other things which I know that I won't get back and have always had JZ replace anything it needed, but if I knew I'd be talking such a big depreciation hit, I would have thought twice about buying it.
I didn't realise buyers had become so sensitive to mileage! or are PCGB members like that?
Reluctantly it looks like I'll have to place it in Autotrader [&o]

Thoughts on any of the above guys?
 
But how good was that 62,000-miler?? Doesn't really answer your basic question, though. I sense that values have dropped a little, but didn't think by THAT much.
 
If someone came to me to say they had found XXX cheaper elsewhere, I'd suggest they go and buy it (as it's such a bargain.).

Well, you'll have to ask Johannes, our London Region organiser as he saw it! Since he's now pursuing that one, I'm assuming it's in extremely good condition!

Maurice, I agree with what you are saying, I had a 3.2 for 3 years and I lost about 5k on that...although I think I'm being extremely realistic in the price considering what it has. It is tempting to keep but I just fancy a change!
 
The 993 was never a mass-produced car compared to modern cars. It's appeal is mostly to afficionados and people who are looking FOR A 993, not just a "911". In this regard, I think there is a very small market for 993s, and those who are looking/can afford to spend c.£30k for a 10 year old 993, are going to look for a mint and low mileage 993. There are low mileage 993s out there, and [unfortunately] the higher mileage (>50k mi) cars will invariably suffer from a lack of demand and a resultant hit in depreciation. Imho, the 993 is not a car to sell if it has high mileage, but a car to cherish and keep.

Sorry to hear your experience, Hasan. I think the drop in 996 values has had the biggest effect on 993 values, but less so on the smaller volume variants and lower mileage cars. There will always be cheaper cars out there, you will have to decide whether your value is correct - but cars should never be thought of as investments IMHO.

well mine is a matter of miles from the 100k barrier..... there are times when I do consider the effect of all those miles I am putting on my car but the thought of not driving my 993 is an even worse thought !

but if such depreciation costs are the price of driving pleasure, then it is a price worth paying.....[:D]
 
Mine would be considered high mileage too then at 82,000 miles. I am surprised that mileage is such an issue - I looked at some with lower mileage before I bought mine and I was slightly suspicious in some cases as their condition seemed poor relative to their mileage. I would also question whether leaving a car standing idle for some time does it much good? There are a whole host of issues which influence a buyer - I suspect mine had been for sale for two or three months before I bought it - that either makes me a poor judge or it is just that some patience is required to find a buyer in what is a small market. Good luck - yours looks very smart.

Well I invest quite a bit in my car(s), but I never expect a positive financial return. [:(]
 
Hi,

Has anyone had positive experience of using Autotrader to sell their 993? Or any other suggested selling avenues?
I want to switch to a 996 so trading into a dealer is a last option I suppose.
I'm having to go down that route as their has been no enquiries from the the ad in the members for sale section, despite going down to the £22k ballpark!.

I found my car in Autotrader but was lucky.

The best online place to advertise is www.911uk.com and they have a great forum lots here also use.

Then for publications you should try : Porsche Post (of course), 911 and Porsche World.

When I bought my first 911 it was 19 years old and had one Owner ... found it in the Sunday Times and it was only 10 mins away from my home...

 
Don't forget quite a few of the PCGB members do not use this forum but do read PP so you should get more coverage with the hard copy advert..... IMHP

Somone on Titanic 993 just said 'interesting car, are those wheels OK for a 993?', or words to that effect!
 
Oh yes, they're fine....I checked with JZ before I bought them and the offset is correct. (No Sticky out wheels for me!)
I actually had the suspension work done after I bought the wheels, so the geometry set up made everything feel lovely and sharp.
I also had the steering rack brace fitted which you should do when fitting 18" wheels.

Is Titanic 993 yet another Porsche website?...must look for it [8|]
 
JZ told me not to bother with the brace unless I wanted to shave track times.... my car came with 18's as a factory option.

The brace that Hasan is refering to is not a strut brace, but a steering rack brace for any 993 fitted with 18" wheels. It came as standard on the C4, but is thought to be a necessity due to the extra pressures put on the rack by running larger wheels and has nothing to do with tightening up the front end..

Not expensive, so if you don't have, I would get one soon.
 
I'm pretty sure the steering rack brace is only recommended with the fitment of 18" wheel to 1994 993's

As far as I know, varioram 993's don't need it with 18's.
