anyone say yay or nay as to wether they'll fit before i take these? 17" 7J ET55 fronts and 9J ET70 rears on a non-abs '88 lux. originally off a 993.

Should fit without problems but handling would be better with spacers. They might look a bit naff as well as they will sit back within the arches

All 944s from the 1987 model year onwards (built from September 1986) are 'ABS' cars, whether its actually fitted or not. Series one cars and 1986 model year (sometimes called 1985-2 or 1985.5 etc) series two cars use 23mm offset wheels. 1987> cars have wider tracked hubs to accomodate the bulky 1980-tech ABS sensors and ran 53mm offset wheels (where 7" rims were fitted).

Id suggest that the fronts are virtually ideal and that the rears offset is technically 8mm short, but theyyll fit perfectly and it wont affect the handling at all. The 8mm of extra offset will make them look a little more purposeful too.
