993 Windscreen replacement

Having survived 3 years with a tiny chip a large crack has now appeared in my windscreen. I have read lots of horror stories about botched replacements and hence wondering if anyone can recommend any glass firms in the East Midlands / South Yorkshire area?

Many thanks
Andrew

ps I feel sure this will be on the forum already but cannot find a search button for love nor money so apologies if I've missed it during my extensive 'man-look'.

Likewise, my rear screen could do with replacing. Any recommendations in the south (Hampshire/Dorset)?
Cheers, Andy

I can't make a recommendation for a workshop in the UK unfortunately. However, if it is replaced, check the frame for rust when the windscreen is removed.
I went to a Porsche specialist in Germany a while ago for a larger repair.
They replaced my windscreen and also repainted the frame - possibly the frame was scratched during a previous replacement from a previous owner...

Good luck :)

I had my windscreen repainted last year and this required the windscreen to be removed. They used a windscreen specialist to remove the windscreen and then replace after the painting. I picked the car up last December and then did not use until March this year. it soon became evident that the screen was letting rain water in at the bottom. The car was returned to the paint shop and they used a different windscreen specialist to remove and replace. The guy even said that the previous instillation was poor. The car is now waterproof around the windscreen. The paperwork from the paint shop did not identify which installer was involved. Just be careful in who removes and replaces your windscreen.

My only advice is to get a proper Porsche screen AND fitter
your good Indy should know one

great guy and as already mentioned the previous replacement was terrible and I had the whole screen scuttle done by Pete at Langley auto before new screen put back in
all in all cost nearly £2k but beautiful job

This is a nightmare situation and like the OP I put up with a chip (and persuaded my MOT guy to put up with a chip!) for quite a few years, but eventually an (unrelated) crack across large area of screen appeared.

I asked around and no one knew any good solutions. Eventually my local OPC persuaded me the contractor they use really understood 993s and they promised he would do a good job. Then there was a long delay because the "genuine Porsche part" did not fit! (A batch problem apparently). The finished job did look OK initially and it does not creak in the same way as the previous screen, however the fitter had scratched the paint work (but covered up the scratch with some colour so I only spotted this months later) and the rubber surround has since shrunk revealing a 1mm area of removed paint that's going to need the windscreen out to fix!

It's depressing but the only solution would be to leave the car in the garage and never drive it!

Hi Dylan
This is nothing to do with windscreens but in 2014 you advised me of a repair shop in Harpenden. I Have a small dent on my RRover and have forgotten the name of the company and I need to get it repaired. They did a good job on my sons car but he has a touch of the same oldtimers that I have. Can you help me out (but no Aricept).

Regards Jonathan

It was Dave at Southdown harpenden Jonathan
hes a great guy
I'll try and dig his phone number out
cheers

Paul the Glassman at Glasstec is my recommendation. He knows the 993 screen process very well indeed, and assures a central and creak free fit.

Dylan,
Thanks for getting back so quickly. I have found the telephone number for DK Repairs on the Southdown Industrial Estate. I am sure that this is the one you recommended etc etc

Regards
Jonathan

A quick update now the issue is sorted...

Ben at Renspeed in Retford put me on to Stuart at National Windscreens (07836 274865) - his guys have experience replacing this particular screen. Once the old screen was removed it was apparent that the tin worm had set in and some body work was needed at the bottom edge of the screen - no surprises there. My old screen was slightly creaky - the fitter pointed out where the hard plastic window frame had been rubbing on the body work in one corner - it basically hadn't been bonded in with equal spacing all the way around. So in my experience the creaking has nothing to do with a lack of special tape etc etc, just poor fitting.

The guys from National windscreen were happy to wait while Retford Auto Finishers attended to the scabby window frame and scuttle before refitting. All back together now and not a single squeak - very happy. Whilst the crack was annoying I think had the screen been left another year or two there would have been some body perforations to deal with, so a blessing in disguise I think.

Andy

Agree on the poor fitting being the cause of screen noise. Well centred screens don't need tape etc. The tape is merely a bodge to try and mask the issue in my opinion.
